OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton softball team jumped out to a 3-2 lead before falling 9-4 in the series opener to DePaul on Friday afternoon at the Creighton Sports Complex.
The Bluejays fall to 14-26 on the year and 4-16 in BIG EAST play, while DePaul improves to 25-20 overall and 13-6 in league play, holding on to the fourth spot in the BIG EAST standing.
Junior Mikayla Santa Cruz struck out two during the top half of the first before the Bluejays gained a 1-0 edge in the bottom half of the frame.
Junior Sam Alm worked a five-pitch walk, while classmate Kailey Wilson delivered a single to center, moving Alm to second. Six pitches later, junior Kiara Mills loaded the bases with a walk. Sophomore Alyssa Gappa then drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to deep center field, giving the Bluejays a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Demons used a pair of walks and a pair of throwing error to plate two and take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning. Maranda Guiterrez drew a six-pitch walk before Skylot Hilger reached on a throwing error. The Bluejays walked Brooke Johnson before Anna Wohlers hit a sacrifice fly into the left centerfield gap to plate DePaul's first run of the game. Kate Polucha then reached on Creighton's second error of the inning which allowed Hilger to score and give the Blue Demons a 2-1 lead.
The Bluejays answered with a run of their own in the home half of the inning as Alm collected her 100th hit of her career to lead off the inning. Wilson was then hit by a pitch and Mills avoided the tag on a beautiful sacrifice bunt that turned into a single, loading the bases once again. Following a strikeout, sophomore Emma Rosonke drove in her 42nd run of the season on a sacrifice fly to right center, knotting the contest up at 2-2.
With Rosonke's 42nd RBI of the season, she moved into a tie for seventh with five former Bluejays on Creighton's single-season RBI top-10 list.
Creighton regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when junior Brittney Manthie beat out a bunt single to third and stole second to open the frame. Wilson brought Manthie home on her second single of the day down the right field line, giving the Bluejays a 3-2 advantage. It was Wilson's team-leading 15th multi-hit game and her 26th RBI of the season.
DePaul, however, responded in a big way by plating five runs in the sixth inning, taking a 7-3 lead. A leadoff double by Polucha and a two-run home run by Tori Meyer gave the Blue Demons a 4-3 edge, before a third Bluejays error, a walk and a single loaded the bases for DePaul. A groundout by Hilger pushed the lead out to 5-3 while a two-run single by Wohlers extended the advantage to 7-3.
The Blue Demons would score two more runs and take a 9-3 lead in the seventh on a double by Riley Pool, before sophomore Jena Lawrence struck out the side to end the inning.
The Bluejays got one run back as Gappa launched her third home run of the season over the centerfield wall to cut the deficit to 9-4. DePaul's Sarah Lehman would retire the next three Bluejays on her way to her 11th win of the season.
Wilson, Gappa and Manthie each collected a pair of hits, while Alm had a hit and scored a pair of runs for the Bluejays. Santa Cruz struck out eight and allowed just two earned runs over 5.2 inning of work.
Creighton and DePaul will continue the series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. The Bluejays will be recognizing six seniors and will have an autograph session following tomorrow's contest.
