Scouting Creighton (23-11, 8-1 BIG EAST)
The Bluejays are entering the most difficult two-week stretch of BIG EAST play as Creighton travels to Xavier, then to Connecticut in consecutive series.
Entering the weekend Creighton is hitting .266 as a team, led by the trio of Alan Rode (.389), Jared Wegner (.352, 9 HR) and Andrew Meggs (.319).
Â
On the mound the Bluejays have a 3.46 ERA, which lowers to 2.67 in BIG EAST action. The leader of the pitching staff is BIG EAST Preseason Pitcher of the Year Dylan Tebrake (6-1, 2.43 ERA) with 62 strikeouts in 59.1 innings and Saturday starter Dominic Cancellieri (4-1, 4.22 ERA).
Scouting Xavier (21-21, 5-4 BIG EAST)
Consistently the Musketeers play one of the tougher non-conference schedules. This year followed that pattern as Xavier faced No. 1 Tennessee on Tuesday (L, 1-10), went to No. 2 Oregon State for a series in February and also played at No. 17 Louisville as well as Alabama and hosted Michigan
The Musketeers enter the weekend series with Creighton at 21-21, including 5-4 in BIG EAST action. Xavier has taken its last two conference series with Villanova and Georgetown, but dropped the opening tussle with Seton Hall.
Â
Xavier is hitting .275 as a team, led by Luke Franzoni (.342), Tyler DeMartino (.312) and Garrett Schultz (.296). A staple of the Musketeer offense is the long ball, as a team Xavier has 59 including 16 from Franzoni and nine by DeMartino.
On the mound Xavier is less settled as the team has a 5.84 ERA with 224 walks and 351 strikeouts in 362.1 innings. Nine different Musketeers have started at least two games this season.
Series History with Xavier (15-14)
Creighton owns a slim 15-14 lead over Xavier, including a 5-4 edge in Cincinnati. Creighton took the last series at Xavier in 2018. The two teams have met six times in the BIG EAST Tournament with Xavier taking four of those six contests.
Recapping Last Weekend:
Creighton (2-1 vs. Seton Hall)
Playing five games in a week for the first time in 2022, the Bluejays took the first two games from Seton Hall in
convincing fashion with an 8-1 win over Friday and a 14-1 victory on Saturday.
Creighton dropped a contested series finale to the Pirates 10-9 as Seton Hall pushed across the lead run in the top of the ninth and the Bluejays were unable to answer in their half.
Xavier (2-1 at Georgetown)
Xavier claimed the opening game at Georgetown with three runs in top of the ninth to secure a 4-1 win. The critical hit for the Musketeers was a two-run single by Luke Franzoni with the bases loaded.
The long ball hurt the Musketeers in the second game,
allowing three to the Hoyas in a 6-4 loss.
The series finale saw Xavier rally for an 8-7 win with seven runs in the seventh inning. The Musketeers got two-run home runs from Jack Cushing as well as pinch-hitter Lane Flamm (a pitcher for Xavier).
Wegner Passes Robertson's Reached Base Streak
Jared Wegner enters the series at Xavier with a 27-game streak of reaching base safely. That moved him by former teammate Will Robertson's streak of 26 games to close the 2019 season. Wegner's next target is also a teammate from 2019, Isaac Collins with 34 consecutive games. Collins reached in the final two games of 2018 and the first 32 of 2019.
Should Wegner eclipse Collins, the next target is the 52-game streak of Trever Adams stretching from the final seven games of 2010 and the entire 45 games he played in 2011.
Tebrake Claims Second Honor Roll Spot of 2022
Tebrake made two starts (April 18 and 22), tossing seven shutout innings with six strikeouts in the Bluejays' series opening 8-1 win over Seton Hall on Friday (April 22). Tebrake moved to 6-1 with the win, allowing just three hits and one walk to the Pirates. After working around two hits in the first, Tebrake retired 14 of the next 16 Seton Hall hitters. He went on to take the ball through seven innings, tossing 105 pitches.
