Wilson Homers Twice As Softball Captures 11-6 Senior Day Win Over DePaul

The Bluejays erupted for 11 hits and snapped a 14-game losing streak in the win
The win snaps a 14-game losing skid as the Bluejays improve to 15-26 on the year and 5-16 in BIG EAST play. DePaul suffers just their second loss in their last 14 conference games and fall to 25-21 on the year and 13-7 in league play.
The Bluejays captured the victory after scoring two in the first, four in the third, one in the fifth and four more in the sixth. Wilson led the Bluejays offense with a trio of hits, including a pair of home runs and a career-high five RBI to up her batting average up .439 on the season. She will enter tomorrow's season finale ranked second in school history for batting average and on-base percentage (.545).
Sophomore Madeline Vejvoda collected a pair of hits, including a double and scored three times, while six other Bluejays recorded at least one hit.
Junior starting pitcher Kate Mullally worked around a pair of walks in the top half of the first, before Creighton grabbed an early 2-0 lead on a two-run home run by Wilson in the bottom half of the inning.Vejvodaled off the first with a single to left and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt junior SamAlm.Wilson then launched her ninth home run of the season over the right field wall to give the Bluejays the 2-0 edge.
DePaul answered and took their first lead of the game with three runs in the top of the third inning. The Blue Demons loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk before Brooke Johnson worked a five-pitch walk to drive in DePaul's first run of the game. DePaul plated two more as Anna Wohlers pushed Maranda Gutierrez across the plate on a sacrifice fly. Skylor Hilger also came around to score on the play as Brooke Johnson was caught in a pickle in-between first and second, giving the Blue Demons a 3-2 lead.
Creighton responded and regained the lead with four runs of their own in the home half of the frame. Vejvoda lined a shot off the centerfield wall for a stand-up double to open the inning. Following a groundout, Wilson delivered her second home run of the game over the right centerfield wall, giving the Bluejays a 4-3 advantage.
Junior Kiara Mills kept things going with a single back up the middle and sophomore Alyssa Gappa drew a four-pitch walk while Saren Croker extend the Jays lead out to 6-3 with a two-run single through the right side of the infield.
DePaul knotted the game up at 6-6 with a single run in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth on RBI singles from Gutierrez (fourth), Kate Polucha (fifth)and Baylee Cosgrove (fifth).
Creighton wasted no time breaking up the tie as the Bluejays plated one run in the bottom half of the fifth. Wilson drew a five-pitch walk to open the frame before pinch runner Josey Marquette advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mills. Sophomore Emma Rosonke then moved herself into a tie for fifth on Creighton's single-season RBI record list by collecting her 43rd RBI of the season on a single to right that scored Marquette, giving the Jays a 7-6 lead.
The Bluejays continued their hot day at the plate with four more runs in the home half of the sixth to extend their lead out to 11-6. Sophomore Cayla Nielsen led off the inning with an opposite-field single, while junior Brittney Manthie followed with a single up the middle and Vejvoda reached on an error to load the bases.
Nielsen would score on a wild pitch that also advanced Manthie and Vejvodato second and third. Alm then battled and pushed two more across with a nine-pitch at-bat that resulted in a single. Wilson continued her dominance by collecting her third hit of the afternoon and her career-high fifth RBI with a run scoring single into right field, extending the Bluejays lead to 11-6.
Junior Mikayla Santa Cruz retired the side by striking out Cosgrove in the top half of the seventh to earn her sixth win of the season and the Bluejays first win since April 1.
The Bluejays honored Shayna Dahlen, Sam Alm, Kiara Mills, Kate Mullally, Mikayla Santa Cruz and Brittney Manthie, as well as student-manager Kiahana Scott after the game.
Creighton and DePaul will conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. at the Creighton Sports Complex.
