Bluejay Baseball Claims 14-6 Win Over Butler

Creighton Victory Clinches a Spot in the BIG EAST Tournament
Omaha, Neb. -- The Creighton Baseball team clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament with a 14-6 win over Butler on Sunday, May 15. The game was suspended in the bottom of the seventh on Saturday evening after inclement weather including lightning and rain set in.
Creighton victory elevating the Bluejays to 27-16 on the season and 12-5 in BIG EAST action, while Butler fell to 18-32-1 overall and 2-14-1 in conference action.
A high-powered game for the offense saw the top four hitters in the Creighton lineup (Andrew Meggs, Alan Roden, Jared Wegner and Jack Grace) go 15-for-22 (.682) with nine runs scored and 11 RBI.
Creighton got rolling in the top of the first with singled by Meggs and Roden, then an RBI ground out off the bat of Wegner.
After Butler knotted the game at 1-1 in the top of the second on an RBI single from former Bluejay Nick Ortega, the Creighton offense went back to work. The Bluejays plated four runs on five hits to grab a 5-1 edge. Meggs highlighted the frame with a two-run double, while Wegner delivered an RBI double as well. The fourth run of the frame scored on a passed ball.
Butler responded with two runs in the third, courtesy of RBI singles by Kollyn All and Dominic Milano. Creighton added to its 5-3 edge with a pair of runs in the fourth, getting a two-out, two-run single by Grace.
The Bulldogs scratched across a single run in the fifth, but Creighton responded with five runs in its half of the frame. The Bluejay tallies came on an RBI single by Meggs, a two-run single by Roden, a wild pitch and an RBI single from Grace.
Holding a 12-4 lead as the game moved to the sixth, Creighton got an insurance run courtesy of an RBI triple by freshman catcher Hogan Helligso. Butler countered with a pair of runs in the seventh, but lightning forced the game to be suspended with Creighton holding a 13-6 edge.
When play resumed on Sunday, Wegner blasted a solo home run to push the game to the final score of 14-6.
Reliever Daniel Hammond earned the win (2-2) with 1.2 innings of one-run relief, while Butler starter Cole McDaniel took the loss (2-5). McDaniel allowed five runs on eight hits in three innings of work.
Meggs, Roden and Grace each closed the game with a team-high four hits to guide the offense.
The Bluejays and Bulldogs will conclude the three-game series at 12:50 pm.
