Series History with Xavier (17-15)
The Bluejays took the season series from Xavier in 2022, taking two-of-three meetings with the Musketeers at Xavier.
The two teams have a long history in a short period of time as BIG EAST foes. Creighton has faced Xavier seven times in the BIG EAST Tournament, going just 2-5. The Musketeers and Bluejays have met twice for the championship, with Xavier claiming the 2014 tournament and Creighton taking it in 2019.
Thursday will be just the second time the Bluejays have faced Xavier in the opening round.
Scouting Creighton
Travel restrictions cost the Bluejays a chance to play for a share of the BIG EAST title after a weird final weekend saw Connecticut get swept by Georgetown, while the Bluejays took both games at Villanova.
The Bluejays' strength is the top of their order (Meggs, Hess, Roden and Wegner) as well as the top of its staff (Tebrake).
Tebrake became the two-time BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year on Wednesday, guiding Creighton to a team ERA of 3.79. While Tebrake anchors the rotation, junior Tommy Steier has delivered a dominant and unconventional season at the back end. The right-handed is fifth in the NCAA with a 1.55 ERA and has collected eight saves. Yet Steier has also pitched six innings of relief in a game this season and often is asked to toss multiple frames.
At the plate the Bluejays rely on Co-Player of the Year Roden (.394), Meggs (.325) and get the power from Wegner
(11 home runs and 52 RBI). The key to the BIG EAST Tournament will be how well the bottom half of the lineup can produce.
Scouting Xavier
The home town Musketeers can simply rake! Xavier enters the weekend hitting .292 as a team with four bats over .300. Luke Franzoni has been a monster at the dish with a team best .350 average, 24 home runs and 62 RBI. Against Creighton (April 29-May 1), Franzoni was at his best. The outfielder went 6-for-10 with five walks in the three-game series with the Bluejays.
If the Xavier bats have a flaw, it's the strikeout as the Musketeers have went down 497 times this season.
On the mound Xavier will try to piece the game together with an opener and will use multiple arms in each game.
No Opening Game Jitters for the Bluejays
Having reached the BIG EAST Tournament six times prior to 2022, Creighton has a perfect 6-0 record in the opening game.
The Bluejays faced Xavier is 2014, but have drawn Seton Hall in each of their last five appearances. The last time Creighton fell in the first round of a conference tournament came in 2013 as the Bluejays went 0-2 in their final run as members of the Missouri Valley.
