Storrs, Conn. -- Powered by a two-run single from Teddy Deters and masterful pitching, Creighton Baseball opened BIG EAST Conference action with a 3-1 road win at Connecticut on Thursday, April 2. The win pushed the Bluejays to 14-13 on the season and 1-0 in BIG EAST action, while UConn fell to 15-16 overall and 2-2 in conference contest.
A pitcher's duel saw the Huskies take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Peyton Jemison lined a two-out RBI double to left field to bring home Nater Wacher from second.
Creighton responded in the fifth with a pair of runs as Connor Capece laced a leadoff single. One out later an eight pitch walk to Rocco Gump and an infield single from Nick Venteicher filled the bags with Bluejays. With two down in the frame, Deters laced the first pitch he saw through the left side for a two run single.
Bluejay starter Shea Wendt retired the first two UConn batters in the fifth, before allowing consecutive singles and giving way to reliever JT Adams. The right hander quickly doused the Huskies' thought of a swift response by striking out Cam Righi to close the frame.
Creighton pushed across an insurance run in the ninth as Isaac Wachsmann worked a leadoff walk, then Capece chased him to third with a single to right-center. Lew Rice followed with a safety squeeze towards the right side. UConn reliever Greg Shaw III gloved the bunt and tried to shovel it home, but Wachsmann slide past the tag attempt to give the Bluejays a 3-1 edge.
Adams went on to collect the win (2-1) with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, while Jimmy Burke worked two flawless frames for his second save of the season. Connecticut starter Charlie West took the loss (3-3), allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over seven innings.
Deters and Capece led Creighton's offense with two hits each.
The Bluejays and Huskies continue their three-game series on Friday, April 3 at 1:05 pm (CT).
