Creighton to Face Xavier in an Elimination Game Later Tonight
Mason, Ohio -- The Creighton Baseball team dropped a battle with Connecticut in the winner's bracket at the BIG EAST Tournament on Saturday, May 28 by a score of 7-1.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 31-17 on the season, while Connecticut climbed to 45-13. Creighton immediately moves into the elimination bracket and will face Xavier in a game scheduled to begin no earlier than 5:30 pm (CT).
The Huskies grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with three consecutive two-out singles, the latter coming from catcher Matt Donlan. Creighton got out of the frame with a heads up move by Bluejay catcher Hogan Helligso faked a throw to second and caught Ben Huber off third base.
Creighton pulled even in the third on back-to-back doubles from Helligso and junior Andrew Meggs, but that was all the Bluejays pushed across.
Connecticut responded in the bottom of the third with two down, using a hit by pitch and a walk to set the table for a three-run home run by Korey Morton to make it 4-1.
The Huskies tacked on three more in the sixth, getting a solo home run from Morton, an RBI double by Zach Bushling and a sacrifice fly by Erik Stock.
Bluejay starter Cade Lommel took the loss (1-5), allowing four runs on five hits and one walk in three innings. Connecticut starter Pat Gallagher collected the win (9-3), limiting Creighton to one run on three hits in seven frames.
