Shaun Campbell sinks long eagle putt to win individual title
HOMER, Neb. -- Creighton senior Shaun Campbell eagled the final hole as part of a fantastic finish to win the Throw Down Up Top at Landmand on Tuesday. Campbell, who birdied 15, 16 and 17 prior to his walk-off eagle on 18, topped the field of 59 competitors by one shot with a 10-under total of 209 (67-69-73).
Campbell's performance helped Creighton shoot a program-record 35-under for the event and helped CU top the eight-team field by 30 shots. That showing included a program-record 274 (-18) in the second round on the Par 73 Landmand Golf Club course that measured 7,140 yards.
Â
Campbell opened the tournament with six birdies and an eagle en route to a 6-under 67. That made him one of two players in team history to shoot a round of 6-under or better multiple times as a Bluejay, joining Nate Vontz. His second round featured eight birdies during a 4-under 69 that was part of the best 18-hole team score (an 18-under 274) in program history. Campbell led all players in par 5 scoring with a 4.13 average (-13).
Â
Campbell was 5-over through 14 holes in Tuesday's final round before finishing birdie, birdie, birdie, eagle to take medalist honors for the second time in his career. It was also good enough to help the senior earn BIG EAST Golfer of the Week accolades on Wednesday. Campbell trailed South Dakota State's Luke Honner by one shot heading into the 54th and final hole before draining a 25-foot putt for the walk-off win.
The Tauranga, New Zealand native had plenty of help as the Bluejays ran away with the team title. Eleven of CU's 15 rounds as a team were par or better, including a 66, two 67s, two 68s and a 69.
Grant Feldman placed third after scores of 68, 72 and 71 for a 211 total, giving him six straight rounds of par or better. It's his second consecutive top-five finish after a runner-up finish at the Big O Classic last week. Feldman was second in the field in par 4 scoring at 6-under par.
Owen Price (75-66-73=214 ) and Charlie Zielinski (72-74-68=214) both tied for fifth place. For Price, it marked the freshman's first top-five finish at the collegiate level. His second round 66 was also a season-low by five shots and tied the Landmand Golf Course club record. Price had five birdies and an eagle in his record-tying round.
A senior from Omaha, Zielinski earned his seventh top-five finish of his career, second-most in program history. Zielinski also tied John Sutko's (2004-08) program record for career rounds of par or better with 35, including two this tournament.
Fellow Omahan Jake Boor's second round 67 highlighted his tie for 41st place. It was the junior's first career round under par, five shots better than the even-par 72 he fired last week at The Club at Indian Creek. Boor's 67 including eight birdies.
Â
Leading the Bluejay group competing as individuals but not factoring into the CU team score were Jackson Thompson (78-72-74=224), who tied for 23rd. Thompson's 72 tied a season-low and was his 10th round of par or better in his career and came thanks in part to back-to-back eagles to open his round.
Junior Owen Mackin (73-77-75=225) tied for 27th, and freshman Brock Kuhlman (80-85-89=254) finished 58th overall. Mackin now owns six career rounds of par or better in 33 loops as a Bluejay.
Creighton's (282-274-285) 841 total beat runner-up South Dakota State (292-291-288=871) by 30 shots. CU's 841 total (-35) ranked second-best in program history, trailing the 836 at Stampede at the Creek in October of 2021, though that was played on a Par 72 course (The Club at Indian Creek), which means it was a 28-under total.
Prior to the second round 274, Creighton's previous best team score was a 275 in the first round of the Stampede at the Creek on Oct. 4, 2021, though that came on a par 72 course (The Club at Indian Creek). That same effort in 2021 was the also the previous best with a 13-under group total.
Creighton's team title was its third in the last 20 years among events with more than five teams, and second in a row. Last week CU tied for the title at the Big O Classic, only to lose the tiebreaker via a scorecard playoff against an Omaha team that it beat by 57 shots this week.
The event was the final one of the fall for Creighton, which returns to the course in the spring.
