Scouting Seton Hall (6-3-3, 1-2-1 BIG EAST)
Seton Hall enters the match on Saturday with an impressive 5-1-1 mark at home. Over the last five matches the Pirates are 2-1-2, including a 4-2 home win against Connecticut and a 3-1 home victory against Priceton.
The tandem of Andrea Borg and James Boote guide Seton Hall's attack with a combined nine goals and nine assists. Borg holds the team lead with five goals and five assists.
Fifteen different Pirates have delivered at least one point this season, including nine with at least one goal.
In the net Seton Hall has turned to Mats Roonda in 10 matches (900 minutes) and Matias Molina twice (180 minutes). Molina was in goal for the Pirates last match, the 3-1 win over Princeton. Roonda has allowed 11 goals (1.10 GAA), while Molina has surrendered two (1.00 GAA).
Scouting Creighton (3-4-5, 2-1-0 BIG EAST)
With the 2023 season hitting the stretch run, the Bluejays appear could use a similar burst that Creighton fans have seen in each of the past two seasons. Creighton has road matches with the Pirates and St. John's to go along with home contests versus #3 Akron and Connecticut left on the schedule.
The Bluejay scoring punch picked up last week with four goals in two matches. Three of the Creighton tallies came on corner set plays.
Freshman Miguel Arilla took over the scoring lead with his third goal of the season, giving him nine points (three goals and three assists). Creighton's goal leader remains Alfie Pope with four goals, while Giorgio Probo has delivered five assists.
In goal the Bluejays have gone with sophomore Blake Gillingham over the last six matches. Blake has allowed seven goals (1.17 GAA), making 26 saves.
Ventura Scoring Pace
Playing along the back line for the Bluejays, it isn't overly surprising that junior Miguel Ventura did not have a goal in his first 46 matches for the Bluejays. His first goal came in his 3,169th minute on the pitch for Creighton, scoring against Omaha on October 3rd. What was surprising is that Ventura struck again in just 78:41, delivering his second goal in Creighton's 2-2 draw with Butler on Oct. 7.
Will the Last Meeting Impact Saturday's Match
The last time the Pirates and Bluejays met was in the BIG EAST Semifinal last season, with Creighton posting a 6-0 win to advance. Several players remain on each sideline. The question will be does the outcome provide confidence for the Bluejays, motivation for the Pirates, both or will it have no impact at all.
What a Difference a Year Can Make
One year ago Creighton's Duncan McGuire was helping the Bluejays prepare for a road match at Seton Hall on Oct. 15, 2022. Coming off that match McGuire scored at least one goal in seven consecutive contests, including four against the Pirates in the BIG EAST Tournament Semifinals. He led Creighton to the program's sixth College Cup by posting and NCAA best in points (50) and goals (23). He earned the MAC Hermann Award, then was taken sixth in the 2022 MLS Super Draft by Orlando City. Duncan was nominated for the 2023 ESPY for Best College Athlete in Men's Sports. He has played in 28 matches, including 17 starts for Orlando City, with 11 goals. Now the Omaha native was called up to play and start for the US National Team, playing 73 minutes in a 2-1 win over Mexico on Oct. 11, 2023!
If Today was the Last Day
The 2023 season marks the first time that eight teams will reach the conference's postseason. The new format calls for the highest overall conference points securing the No. 1 seed, along with the team in the opposite division with the highest conference point total locking up the
No. 2 seed. The remaining six seeds, regardless of division, will be determined by conference points. Although there are still four matches to play, entering play on Saturday here is a look at how the BIG EAST Tournament would play out. Georgetown and Xavier would be the top two seeds, while Akron, Connecticut, Creighton, Providence and St. John's would be in the
tournament. Tiebreakers would be needed to separate Butler, Seton Hall and Villanova. The conference is very tight as fourth place through 11th place are range from six points (Creighton and Connecticut) to three points (Marquette).
