KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Creighton women's tennis improved upon its best start under head coach Tom Lilly with a 5-2 win over Kansas City on Tuesday afternoon at the KC Racquet Club in Kansas City, Mo.
The victory moved the Bluejays to 6-0 on the season, while the Roos fell to 3-5 overall with the loss.
Creighton began Tuesday's match in a strong fashion as the Bluejays claimed the doubles point with victories in both the second and third doubles position. Freshman Ana Paula Martinez and sophomore Valerie Negin earned the Bluejays first victory of the afternoon with a 6-1 win over Catherine Chrobak and Ashley Jacobson at the No. 2 spot. Moments later the team of Siri Kongara and Bianca Rademacher delivered an identical 6-1 win over Joanna Cardona and Eva Kresovic on the No. 3 doubles court to give Creighton a 1-0 lead in the match.
Rademacher got singles play off to a promising start for the Bluejays with a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Kresovic in the No. 5 spot, improving to 4-0 in singles play during her dual meet career with the Bluejays. Kongara followed suit at the No. 6 singles, earning a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Tuana Tinaztepe as the Bluejays went ahead 3-0 in the match.
Kansas City's Cardona won at the No. 4 singles for the first point of the match for the Roos before Chrobak captured a victory at the No. 2 singles to cut the Bluejays lead down to 3-2.
The Bluejays, however, would capture the overall dual win and improve to 6-0 on the year when Malvika Shukla clinched the match with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Michela Xibilia at the top singles position to give Creighton a 4-2 lead. With the triumph, Shukla improved to 5-0 in singles play, including a perfect 3-0 mark at the top singles spot this season.
Martinez also remained undefeated in singles play this year after closing out the match with a 7-5, 6-3 straight-sets win over Laura Baroja at the No. 3 singles position.
"This was a battle against a very good team," said Lilly. "We needed to compete at each position, and I thought we did a good job of that today. Our doubles continue to improve and in these close matches it is great to start up a point. We will continue to manage our injuries and see where we are for each match. It's been a challenge, but this group loves challenges."
The Bluejays will return to the courts on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they travel to Des Moines, Iowa to battle former Missouri Valley Conference rival, Drake.
