DES MOINES, Iowa – The Creighton women's tennis team had its six match winning streak snapped with a 4-3 loss to Drake at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday afternoon.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 6-1 on the season, while Drake improved to 5-3 with the win. The six-match winning streak to start the year was the Bluejays best start under head coach Tom Lilly.
The Bluejays captured the early lead with a pair of victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions. Graduate transfer Leanne Kendall and junior Malvika Shukla continued their winnings ways with 6-2 win at the top singles spot, while freshman Ana Paula Martinez and Valerie Negin captured an identical 6-2 win on the No. 3 doubles court to give Creighton a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Bulldogs responded in singles play, taking a 3-1 lead with triumphs at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles positions. Drake's Mille Haagensen picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win on the No. 2 court, while Elizabete Kalvinska claimed a 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 victory at the No. 4 spot, before Oriana Parkins Godwin captured a 7-5, 6-4 win on court No. 5.
The Bluejays answered with a three-set win at the top singles position by Shukla to cut the deficit down to 3-2. Shukla won the opening set 6-2 but fell in the second frame 6-4 forcing a decisive third set. In the final set, Shukla raced out to an early lead claiming the victory with a 6-2 set win.
Drake, however, regrouped and clinched the overall dual with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 6 spot by Jyun-Yi Lee.
The Bluejays narrowed the margin of victory for the Bulldogs down to 4-3 as Martinez closed out the match with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 win over Darinka Stepan at the No. 3 singles spot.
"Another close match that could have gone either way," said Lilly. "We lost momentum at times for too long and that is something we haven't done much this season. We will regroup and rest up for tomorrows home match against Milwaukee."
Creighton will return to their home court on Sunday, February 19 for a match against UW-Milwaukee. First serve between the Bluejays and Panthers is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
