Ana Paula Martinez and Malvika Shukla remained unbeaten this spring with pair of straight-set victories
OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's tennis team coasted to a 6-1 victory over Milwaukee at the Hanscom Tennis Center on Sunday morning.
The Bluejays returned to the win column, improving its overall record to 7-1, while Milwaukee fell to 4-6 with the loss.
"A very good match today against some big hitters," said head coach Tom Lilly. "It was nice to see us play better doubles this weekend, as we are much better there than we were a few weeks ago. We had to keep focused throughout singles play to take this match as we were without two players that we anticipated starting for us. Next week will be two great conference matches and we will work hard to get ready for that this week."
Creighton won the doubles point with a pair of victories. Ana Paula Martinez and Valerie Negin earned a quick 6-1 victory at the No. 3 doubles. Minutes later, Malvika Shukla and Leanne Kendal clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 triumph at the No. 1 doubles position.
Shukla continued her winnings ways by claiming Creighton's first point in singles play, defeating Babette Burgersdijk 6-0, 6-4 in straight sets at the No. 1 singles spot. With the win, Shukla remained unbeaten, moving to 8-0 on the season in singles play.
Freshman Annika Elvestrom stretched the Bluejays lead to 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 6 slot over Milwaukee's Giorgia Cavestro, before Negin clinched the victory for the Jays with an identical 6-0, 6-2 victory over Nadiia Konieva at the No. 3 spot.
Kendall kept Creighton's momentum going with a 4-6, 6-2, 10-3 triumph over Sara Simonova at the No. 4 singles spot, while Martinez closed out the Bluejays victory with a 7-5, 6-2 win on the No. 2 court. Martinez also remained unbeaten this spring in singles play, also improving to 8-0 on the year.
Milwaukee's lone point came at the No. 5 singles, where Alice Shields claimed a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Siri Kongara.
The Bluejays return to the court on Saturday, February 25 at 2:00 p.m. when it hosts Georgetown in the BIG EAST opener at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
