Baseball Continues 2023 with Weekend Series at Coastal Carolina

Omaha, Neb. -- Following a series win in the opening weekend at McNeese (Louisiana), the Creighton Baseball team raises the level of competition in week two as the Bluejays face the 2016 College World Series champion with a three-game series at Coastal Carolina.

Scouting the Bluejays

If the opening weekend showed one thing for the Bluejays, it was this Creighton squad has depth on the mound.
After dropping a 1-0 pitcher's duel in the season opener, Creighton got just 0.2 innings from its projected starters on Saturday and Sunday. Despite this fact Creighton went 2-0.
Defensively the Bluejays lone error at McNeese came in the opening inning of the series.
Creighton's offense struggled in the first game, but plated 14 runs over the final two games.
USC transfer Tyler Lozano had a big game on Saturday withsix RBI, while Nolan Sailors blasted Creighton's only home run of the series in the top of the ninth on Sunday.

Coastal Carolina won battles with Fairfield and Middle
Tennessee in the first two games of the season, but dropped a Sunday game to VCU and a midweek with NC State.
The Chanticleers' finished the 2022 season 39-20-1, forcing a regional final with East Carolina.
Coastal Carolina sends Alex Edmondson to the bump on Friday. The right-hander went five innings in the season opener, allowing three runs (two earned).
At the plate the Chanticleers are hitting .280 as a team, led by Payton Eeles (.500) and Derek Bender (.400). Eeles has five steals in four games, while the Chanticleers as a team are 10-for-10 on the base paths.
Lozano Makes Statement in Opening Weekend as a Bluejay
Tyler Lozano almost single-handedly delivered Creighton's first win of the 2023 season as the USC transfer went 3-for-4 with six RBI including a pair of two-run doubles on Saturday, February 18 in Creighton's 9-4 win at McNeese.
Lozano blasted a two-run double in the third, a sac fly in the fifth, a two-run double in the sixth and an RBI single in the eighth.

After Saturday starter Cade Lommel struggled in the first inning, freshman Anthony Watts limited McNeese to two runs in 3.2 innings to give the Creighton offense time to rally.
The following day an illness forced scheduled starter Dominic
Cancellieri to skip a start, but grad transfer Justin Kleinsorge stepped in admirably with six shutout innings. Â
Who Needs State Farm
Holding a 1-0 lead in the top of the ninth on Sunday, the Bluejay offense provided their own insurance. Creighton plated four runs on three extra-base hits, including a two-run home run from sophomore Nolan Sailors.
The Key to the Series with Coastal Carolina May Be on the Basepaths
Coastal Carolina enters the series with Creighton a perfect 10-for-10 in steals, while Creighton is 4-for-7. Each squad has a speedster in the order as the Chanticleers' second baseman Payton Eeles is 5-for-5, while Creighton's Nolan Sailors is 4-for-4.
