Bluejay Women Looking for Super Win Over Xavier on Sunday

Omaha, Neb. -- One of a handful of contests that will lead the nation into the big game on Super Bowl Sunday, the Creighton women's basketball team faces off with Xavier on Feb. 12. The Bluejays enter Sunday with a five-game winning streak, while the Musketeers have lost 15 consecutive in BIG EAST action.

Scouting Xavier (7-17, 0-15 BIG EAST)
Xavier and Creighton kicked off their BIG EAST seasons against each other when the Bluejays edged out the Musketeers 57-51 in Cincinnati on Nov. 25, 2022. Since then Xavier is 0-14 in conference play while the Creighton has gone 10-4
Coach Melanie Moore has a history of using her team's extensive depth more than usual; nine players are averaging 15+ minutes per game, eight are averaging 21+ minutes per game, and none 30+ minutes per game.
The only Musketeer averaging double-digit points is Mackayla Scarlett (11.4 ppg), but she has missed the last three contests. Taylor Smith and Fernanda Ovalle both totaled team-high 15 points in the home loss to Creighton.
Overall Xavier is scoring 56.1 points per game while ceding 65.4 per game.

Creighton is riding hot shooting hands in their five-game win streak, having shot above 44% from the field in each of their last four games and converted 11+ threes in each of the last three games.
Guard Rachael Saunders tied a career high 14 points (4x) in the Bluejays 77-64 win over Seton Hall on Tuesday, her best scoring game on the season. Saunders was absent due to injury the first time Creighton and Xavier faced off this season. The last time Saunders posted 14 points it was against the Musketeers on Feb. 23, 2020.
Last time out at Xavier, junior Lauren Jensen was the Bluejays leading scorer with 18 points. Since then, Jensen has posted double figures in 14 of 15 games.
The only time the Creighton defense has recorded double-digit steals and 5+ blocks was in the first matchup against Xavier. On the season the Bluejays are averaging 2.9 blocks per game and 6.1 steals per game.

Bluejay Women's and Men's Squads Play Three Times to Commemorate Black Fives
Both Creighton's women's and men's teams are participating in the BIG EAST Conference's Second Annual Black Fives games. Each BIG EAST team hosts one game, while both the men's and women's teams at Creighton have a pair of road games as well.
The BIG EAST's commitment to BE the Change by leading, educating and inspiring others, the Conference is proud to celebrate Black History month by renewing its partnership with the Black Fives Foundation, a nonprofit public charity whose mission is to research, preserve, showcase, teach and honor the pre-NBA history of African Americans in basketball.
Beginning on February 7, the BIG EAST Conference will host 22 basketball games honoring the Black
athletes, coaches and communities who played a critical part in America's basketball history.

From 1904, when basketball was first introduced to African Americans on a wide scale organized basis, through the racial integration of all-White professional leagues in the 1950's, Black Fives squads flourished on the amateur, semi-professional and professional levels in cities like New York City, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and Chicago.

season," said BIG EAST Commissioner, Val Ackerman.

The men and women of the Black Fives Era opened doors for generations of African American players and coaches while staging socially meaningful events that strengthened and inspired Black communities in the face of Jim Crow oppression.

For 22 games, the BIG EAST Basketball Teams will be wearing shooting shirts with the Black Fives mantra "Make History Now". Coaches will wear "Make History Now" pins and fans will be educated through videos and other game time promotions on the relevance and importance of the Black Fives.

Technicalities
Creighton opponents have committed technical fouls in consecutive games as St. John's had a player earn technical on Feb. 4, while Seton Hall head coach Tony Bozella picked up one o n Feb. 7.
Since joining the BIG EAST (2013-14), Creighton has picked up seven, while opponents have been issued 15.
The two teams that have factored in the most technical fouls are Seton Hall and Xavier with four. In each case one was issued to Bluejay head coach Jim Flanery as the Creighton captain earned the infraction against the Pirates and Musketeers during the 2015-16 season. Â
Pink Out Auction Underway
When Creighton Women's Basketball hosts Georgetown on Saturday, February 18th in their annual Pink Out game, Bluejay players will wear pink shooting shirts and pink jerseys for the game.
Fans have the opportunity to honor a friend or family member who has battled cancer or is currently battling cancer by purchasing the apparel via auction (the shooting shirt can be personalized – last name, nickname, etc.).
This year's auction runs through Sunday, February 12. There are 12 jerseys and two team-signed balls listed for bidding.

All funds raised go to benefit The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge right here in Omaha. The Hope Lodge offers a home away from home for cancer patients traveling To Omaha to receive their lifesaving treatment.
When Creighton hosts Georgetown, the first 1,000 fans will receive a pink out shirt, courtesy of Methodist Hospital and CHI Health with tip-off against the Hoyas set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 18.
