
Softball Drops Pitcher's Duel At Omaha, 2-1

OMAHA, Neb. --Â The Creighton softball team dropped a 2-1 pitcher's duel to Omaha on Wednesday night at the Maverick's home facility, Connie Claussen Field.Â
The Bluejays fall to 13-15 on the season with the loss, while the Mavericks improved to 14-8.Â
Creighton jumped out to an early one-run advantage after a half inning of play as the Bluejays used a pair of hits and a pair of walks to push across the first run of the game. Junior Cayla Nielsen and freshman Lily West opened the frame with back-to-back singles before a sacrifice bunt by Madeline Vejvoda moved runners to second and third. A walk by junior Alyssa Gappa loaded the bases for Kailey Wilson, who earned an RBI walk of her own to give Creighton a 1-0 lead.Â
Omaha answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning by Ava Rongisch, her first home run of the season, to level the contest at 1-1.Â
After a scoreless third, the Mavericks took their first lead of the in the bottom of the fourth inning. Omaha used a leadoff walk by Rongisch and an RBI double down the left field line by Sydney Albaugh to take a 2-1 advantage.Â
Both teams put up zeros the rest of the way as the Bluejays best opportunity to score late came in the sixth inning. Junior Emma Rosonke dropped a ball inside the left field foul line for a double but was left stranded in scoring position.Â
Nielsen and West combined for five of the Bluejays seven hits in the game, while West tied her season-high with three base knocks. Wilson drove in Creighton's lone run of the game with an RBI walk in the first inning. Wilson now leads the team with 18 walks this season and 21 RBI.Â
Freshman Natalia Puchino suffered her fifth loss of the season after allowing a pair of runs on four Maverick hits in five innings of work. Omaha's Kamryn Meyer allowed seven hits but recorded nine strikeouts to pick up her sixth win of the season.
Creighton will return to the Creighton Sports Complex when they began a three-game BIG EAST series with Seton Hall at 3:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon.Â
