OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton softball team dropped its BIG EAST home opener to Seton Hall, 7-2, at the Creighton Sports Complex on Friday afternoon.
The loss drops the Bluejays to 13-16 on the year and 0-4 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall improved to 13-10 and 4-3 in league action with the win.
Senior Kailey Wilson was one of four Bluejays to record a hit in the contest, leading the way with a pair of base knocks, including a double. Freshman Lily West also collected a pair of hits in the game, while Cayla Nielsen and Emma Rosonke each recorded one hit. Freshman Natalia Puchino (7-6) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits.
Seton Hall jumped on the scoreboard first, scoring a run in the top of the first inning to take the early lead. Ashly Colonnetta led off the game with a single left before a Bluejay fielding error and a fielder's choice moved her to third. An RBI single through the left side by Kelsey Carr plated the Pirates first run of the game and gave Seton Hall a 1-0 lead.
Creighton would answer with a run of their own in the bottom of the second inning when Rosonke launched her fifth home run of the season of the right field wall to level the contest at 1-1.
The Pirates, however, regained the lead in the top half of the third, when Carr belted a solo home run just over the top of the center field wall to give Seton Hall a 2-1 advantage.
After a scoreless fourth, Seton Hall used a single by Carr and a pair of stole bases by pinch runner Miranda Arruda to place a runner on third before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Abby Wingo, making the score 3-1.
The Bluejays cut the deficit in half with a solo run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Wilson lined a double, her eighth of the season, into the left center field gap. Following a ground out and a walk by Rosonke, freshman Erika Perez delivered an RBI single up the middle, scoring Wilson from third to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Seton Hall's Olivia Gilbert, however, blasted a grand slam in the top of the seven to secure the 7-2 win for the Pirates.
Carr led the Seton Hall offense with three hits, while Gilbert and Shelby Smith each collected a pair of base knocks as the Pirates combined for nine total hits. Carr also earned the win in the circle, striking out six Bluejays while allowing a pair of runs on seven hits.
Creighton and Seton Hall will meet again on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Creighton Sports Complex.
