3/29/2023 6:49:00 PM | Softball
OMAHA, Neb. –The Creighton softball team dropped a midweek battle to Drake, 9-0, in five innings at the Creighton Sports Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
The loss drops the Bluejays to 13-19 on the year, while the Bulldogs improved to 7-20.
Drake jumped on the Bluejays from the start, scoring two runs in the first and one run in the second. A leadoff walk by Haylee. Lehman and a Bluejay error placed runners on second and third before a two-run double to right center by Emma Dighton gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
Creighton threatened to cut into the Bulldogs lead in the bottom half of the first as freshman Lily West and junior Alyssa Gappa drew a pair of walks. Junior Emma Rosonke then singled to right field loading the bases, but Drake's Paige Bedsworth closed the door with a groundout to short to keep the Bluejays off the scoreboard.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 3-0 on a leadoff solo home run by Addie Lightner in the top of the second inning.
The Bluejays loaded the bases once again in the bottom of the fourth with only one out, but a pair of strikeouts from Bedsworth left the Bluejays wanting more.
In the fifth, Drake added six runs on six hits, including a two-run home run from Dighton to secure the 9-0 victory and snap a 10-game losing streak.
Three different Bluejays recorded a hit in the contest, while freshman Natalia Puchino allowed four runs on just four hits in 4.1 innings of work.
The Bluejays return to action at the Creighton Sports Complex on Friday at 3:30 p.m. when they begin a three-game series against Butler.
