Softball Drops Both Games Of Doubleheader At Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Creighton softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Providence on Friday afternoon at Glay Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars earned a 5-0 shutout victory in the first game of the day before securing a 6-5 walk-off win in the eighth inning of game two.
The pair of losses drops the Bluejays to 20-29 on the year and 4-16 in BIG EAST play, while Providence improves to 15-28 overall and 6-14 in league action.
Due to a shift in the upcoming forecast, Creighton and Providence will now wrap up the three-game series with a single game on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 10 a.m. CT.
GAME 1
Locked into a scoreless battle in the bottom of the fifth inning, Providence wasted no time placing the first dent on the scoreboard. Rachael Petrarca opened the frame with a single through the left side of the infield before Kaelyn Loncharich blasted a two-run home run over the left field wall to give the Friars a 2-0 lead.
The Bluejays looked to answer in the top half of the sixth as Creighton loaded the bases on a pair of walks by Kailey Wilson and Saren Croker, as well as a single from Madeline Vejvoda with only one out. The Friars, however, recorded back-to-back groundouts to keep the Bluejays off the scoreboard.
Providence would then extend their lead in the bottom half of the sixth inning with three runs on four hits to take a commanding 5-0 lead. The Friars led off the inning with three straight singles, including an RBI single from Jacque Harrington to take a 3-0 lead. The Friars then extended the lead with a two-run triple to deep right field by Petrarca to secure the 5-0 victory in game one of the doubleheader.
Freshman Natalia Puchino held the Friars at bay early on, taking a no-hitter into the bottom of the fourth inning. Puchino (12-14) struck out seven Friars in the game but suffered the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits.
Vejvoda led the Bluejays offense with a pair of hits in the first game of the day, while Wilson drew a season-high tying three walks in the loss.
GAME 2
In game two, the Bluejays jumped out to an early lead on the Friars, plating two runs in the top of the second inning.Vejvodacontinued her hot hitting with a leadoff double off the top of the right center field wall to open the frame. Following a sacrifice bunt by Croker that moved Vejvoda to third, junior Alyssa Gappa hit a sky-high pop up to the short stop, which was dropped, allowing Vejvoda to come into score the Bluejays first run of the game.Freshman Ella Dalton then lined an RBI double down the left field line to push the Bluejays advantage out to 2-0.
Providence answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the third inning on a solo home run by Gianna Magrino to cut the deficit down to 2-1.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Creighton responded with two runs in the top of the fifth inning to extend their advantage out to 4-1. Back-to-back singles by Cayla Nielsen and Lily West got the Bluejays started before Emma Rosonke slapped a two-run double off the wall in straight away center to give Creighton a 4-1 edge in the game.
The Friars answered once again with a pair of runs on a two-run home run by Emma Douma to cut the deficit to one at 4-3 in the bottom half of the fifth, before tying the game on an RBI double by Tiana Wren in the sixth inning.
The Bluejays would regain the lead in the top of the seventh inning as Dalton lined a single through the right side of the infield before advancing to second on a sac bunt by Nielsen. Following a groundout, Wilson blooped an RBI single into the left center gap, scoring Dalton from second to five Creighton a 5-4 lead.
Providence, however, answered with a single run in thee bottom half of the seventh on a two-out RBI single by Petrarca to send the game into extra innings.
In extras, the Bluejays used back-to-back singles from Croker and Gappa to place runners on first and second with only one out, but the Bluejays were unable to push any runs across as Providence retired the next two batters via the strikeout.
In the bottom half of the eighth, the Friars took advantage of a leadoff walk by Loncharich and a single by Wren to place runners on first and second with no outs.Magrinothen moved the runners over to second and third on a deep fly ball to right field. Following the flyout, the Bluejays intentionally walked Douma to set up the double play, but a wild pitch by Alyssa Bostley allowed pinch-runner Gabriella Sebastian to score from third to secure the 6-5 walk-off victory for the Friars.
The Bluejays recorded nine hits in the second game of the day as Dalton led the way with a pair of base knocks, while Rosonke drove in a pair of runs for the Bluejays. Junior starting pitcher Jena Lawrence struck out three and allowed four runs on six hits and three walks in 5.2 innings of work, while junior Payton Akers suffered the loss after allowing two runs on one hit and a pair of walks in 1.1 innings of work.
