Bluejay Bats Ignite in 7-0 Shutout Win at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Behind five runs in the first two innings and 14 hits, the Creighton softball team defeated Providence, 7-0, in the series finale on Saturday at Glay Field in Providence, R.I.
The victory moves Creighton to 21-29 on the year and 5-16 in BIG EAST play, while Providence falls to 15-29 overall and 6-15 in league action.
The Bluejays wasted no time taking an early lead as Creighton plated four runs of four hits in the top of the first inning. Junior Cayla Nielsen opened the game with a single back up the middle, while freshman Lily West followed with a double to left center. Junior Emma Rosonke then gave Creighton a 2-0 advantage with her 10th double of the season.
Creighton would then load the bases with a walk and a single by Madeline Vejvoda and Saren Croker, before a four-pitch RBI walk by Alyssa Gappa pushed the lead to 3-0. The Bluejays were not quite done yet as a sacrifice fly by Ensley Frame gave Creighton a 4-0 advantage after the top of the first.
The Bluejays added a single run in the top of the second to extend the lead for the Bluejays out to 5-0. Nielsen once again opened the frame with a double before West lined a single into right center. Following a pitching change, senior Kailey Wilson laced an RBI double into the left center field gap to push in the Bluejays fifth run of the game.
The score would remain 5-0 through the third and fourth innings, before Creighton would tack on two additional runs in the top of the fifth to push the advantage out to 7-0. Freshman Ella Dalton and Nielsen hit consecutive singles, before coming into score on a two-run double to left center by West which pushed the Bluejays lead out to 7-0.
Junior reliever Jena Lawrence would keep the Friars at bay the rest of the way, securing the shutout win for the Bluejays.
Nielsen led Creighton's 14-hit offense with four hits and two runs scored, while West closed the game with three hits, including two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Wilson also recorded a pair of hits in the contest while five other Bluejays recorded at least one hit apiece. The Bluejays also hit five doubles in the game, moving the season total to 76 which ranks second most in a single season in program history and is three shy of tying the school record 79 hits in the 1993 season.
Creighton started Natalia Puchino earned the win for the Bluejays after tossing four scoreless innings, while Lawrence recorded her second save of the year after allowing one hit and striking out four in three scoreless innings of work.
The Bluejays will return home and wrap up the regular season next weekend with a three-game home series against St. John's with postseason aspiration on the line. The series is set to begin on Friday at 4 p.m. from the Creighton Sports Complex.
