Scouting the Wildcats: 5-22
The Wildcats are allowing a clip of over eight runs per game and scoring at a rate of 4.59 runs per game. The team suffered a losing streak of 11 games between Feb. 25 and March 15 and have not won consecutive games yet this season.
Villanova has had seven different pitchers start a game thus far, all of whom are carrying an ERA north of at least 6.80. Opponents are hitting .296 against the staff with 28 home runs.
Offensively, only five players have played in at least 75% of the games and have a minimum of two plate appearances per game and only two have played in all 27 contests. Shortstop Craig Larsen leads the lineup in batting average (.273), hits (30) and RBI (20).
The Wildcats opened conference play at home against Georgetown, losing two of three last weekend, with the winning team scoring 10 runs in each of the contests.
Scouting the Bluejays: 12-10
Coach Ed Servais' squad is looking to extend its season home record above .500 and overall record further above .500 and home record above .500 this weekend. The team is allowing 5.5 runs per game and scoring at a rate of 6.36 runs per game.
The Bluejays are 12-4 when scoring five plus runs per game.
The offense sports seven everyday guys that are hitting above .282, led of late by junior infielder Nolan Clifford who is on an 18-game reached-base streak and leads the team in average at .333. Redshirt freshman outfielder Tate Gillen is on a 12-game reached-base streak of his own and leads the team with a .467 on-base percentage and has struck out six times in 45 at bats.
The deep pitching staff sports five starters and seven relievers that have made at least six appearances this season. The staff's ERA is 5.09 while six pitchers hold an ERA of 5.00 or less.
Kleinsorge Shining in Relief
In Tuesday's cross-town matchup at Omaha, grad transfer Justin Kleinsorge, who has made five starts for the Bluejays thus far this season, came out of the bullpen in the first inning and proceeded to toss 5.2 scoreless frames, striking out a season high nine
batters, and only allowing three base runners.
The performance out of the bullpen was very similar to fellow starter Dominic Cancellieri's in a March 15th midweek against Kansas State where the right hander entered in relief and threw four no-hit innings with a season-high nine strikeouts.
Last season Creighton swept Georgetown in Omaha to begin BIG EAST action.
