Windham Blanks Wildcats in BIG EAST Opener, 6-0

Omaha, Neb. -- Senior Ryan Windham was dynamic in the 2023 BIG EAST opener as the Bluejay ace tossed seven scoreless innings in Creighton's 6-0 victory over Villanova on Thursday, April 6.
Creighton climbed to 13-10 on the season and 1-0 in BIG EAST action with the win, while Villanova fell to 5-23 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
The Bluejays took control of the game from the opening frame as sophomore Nolan Sailors and grad transfer Tyler Lozano lofted consecutive extra base hits into left to make it 2-0. Sailors put Creighton on the board with an RBI double, then Lozano pulled an RBI triple into left. Moments later a wild pitch sent Lozano home as Creighton led 3-0 after one inning.
Creighton pushed its advantage to 5-0 with RBI singles from Lozano and senior Sterling Hayes in the third and tacked on a run in the seventh courtesy of an RBI grounder from sophomore Hogan Helligso.
Windham cruised through the first six frames without any danger and worked out of a two on, one out jam in the seventh to earn his second win (2-2) of the season. Windham scattered four hits and one walk.
Villanova starter Cole Vanderslice took the loss (0-2), allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits in two innings of work.
Sailors and Lozano each closed the game with three hits, while Hayes finished 2-for-2 with an RBI.
The Bluejays and Wildcats continue their three-game series on Friday, April 7 at 6:00 p.m.
