OMAHA, Neb. -- A grand slam home run by Cayla Nielsen and a two-run home run by Kailey Wilson helped the Creighton softball team to a 7-5 victory over St. John's on Saturday afternoon at the Creighton Sports Complex.
The win lifted the Bluejays record to 22-30 on the year and 6-17 in league play, while the Red Storm fell to 21-27 overall and 7-13 in BIG EAST play.
Five different Bluejays recorded a pair of hits in the contest, led by Nielsen's grand slam home run in the fourth and Wilson's RBI single in the first and two-run home run in the third. Junior Jena Lawrence (2-2) recorded the win, tossing 4.0 innings of one run ball. Sophomore starter Alyssa Bostley also tossed three innings in the win.
Creighton soared out to an early lead in the bottom half of the first innings after holding the Red Storm scoreless in the top of the inning. Nielsen opened the frame with a single back up the middle before moving to second on the eighth sacrifice bunt of the season by freshman Lily West. Wilson then drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single up the middle to make the score 1-0.
St. John's answered with two runs in the top of the second inning on a single by Anese Thompson and a sacrifice fly by Amy Mallah to give the Red Storm a 2-1 lead.
Creighton, however, regained the lead in the bottom of the third innings as freshman Ensley Frame delivered a leadoff single to left before scoring on Wilson's team-leading 11th home run of the season. Wilson's home run was also the 37th of her career, which moved her into a tie for fourth on Creighton's all-time career home runs list.
The Red Storm would tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth as Katie Wittaker launched a solo home run out over the out-stretched glove of Nielsen in left. St. John's would then load the bases with a walk, a single and a throwing error before taking a 4-3 lead on a wild pitch. Mallah would then extend the Red Storms lead out to 5-3 on the second sacrifice fly of the day by Mallah.
Down 5-3, Creighton showed no quit and rallied to take a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. A two-out walk by junior Alyssa Gappa put things into motion as freshman Ella Dalton and Frame followed with back-to-back singles to left. Nielsen then crushed her eighth home run and the team's third grand slam of the season to give the Bluejays a 7-5 advantage.
Lawrence and the Bluejays would hold the Red Storm at bay over the final three innings to secure the 7-5 victory.
Eliminated from postseason contention, Creighton will wrap up the 2023 season on Sunday in the series finale against St. John's with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
