
Three Teams Earn BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Awards

Bluejays Hold Third Most Awards in the BIG EAST
New York, N.Y. –– A trio of Creighton teams were among the 22 teams recognized with 2022-23 Team Academic Excellence Awards for compiling the highest collective grade-point averages in each BIG EAST sport on Wednesday, Aug. 9.
The winners were chosen based on the 2022-23 grade-point average of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution's roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference-sponsored sport.
The Creighton sports that were honored were the Bluejay teams in women's basketball, men's cross country and women's golf.
Jim Flanery's women's basketball team owned a 3.488 GPA in the classroom and a 22-9 mark on the court. The Bluejays reached their second consecutive NCAA Tournament and peaked in the national rankings at No. 14.
The men's cross country team, coached by Chris Gannon, owned a 3.851 GPA. That mark ranked not only as the best mark in the BIG EAST but also second in the the nation according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The women's golf team, coached by Debbie Conry, owned a 3.852 GPA. The Bluejay squad has been as consistent as any team in the classroom, earning a national honor (Top-10 GPA) for the sixth time in the last 10 years. The Bluejays delivered the seventh-best GPA in Division I for the second consecutive season and also sent an individual to the NCAA Tournament (Katherine Lemke) for the second straight year.
Eleven schools had at least one team honored, with Butler leading the way with five, while DePaul had the second most with four teams recognized. Creighton rounded out the top three with a trio of programs honored.
