Five Bluejays Finish in Double Figures as #21 Creighton Defeats DePaul 75-68

Chicago, Ill. -- Five Bluejays delivered double-figures, led by 17 points from Lauren Jensen as #21 Creighton defeated DePaul 75-68 in on Saturday, January 6.
The victory lifted the Bluejays to 11-3 on the season and 2-2 in conference play, while DePaul fell to 9-8 overall and 1-3 in BIG EAST action.
Down 5-2 in the opening moments the Bluejays surged ahead behind consecutive treys by Morgan Maly and Emma Ronsiek. Mallory Brake capped an 8-0 burst with a layup to give Creighton a 10-5 edge (6:09). Leading 13-9 moments later (5:22), another surge pushed the Bluejays out to a 23-11 lead with three minutes remaining. This time a trio of free throws by Maly ignited the Bluejays. Ronsiek followed with a driving layup, then Jayme Horan knocked down a three-pointer to make it 21-11. Jensen capped things off with a turnaround jumper. DePaul closed the quarter with a run of its own as the contest moved to the second frame with Creighton leading 26-19.
The Blue Demons closed within four points at 26-22 (8:29) only to see Maly ignite another Bluejay run from downtown. Buckets from Brake and Ronsiek followed as the Bluejays pushed their lead back to 11 at 33-22 (6:19). The fast pace resulted in scoring surges from both sides throughout the second quarter, Creighton pushed its lead to as much as 15 (44-29) with two minutes remaining and led 44-36 at the break.
DePaul closed within four late in the third (58-54 with 2:20 left), but Ronsiek closed the frame with three points and Brake opened the fourth with a layup to extend the advantage back to nine at 63-54 (8:23 in the fourth quarter).Â
The frenetic pace took its toll on both sides in the second half, specifically in the fourth quarter as Creighton went 3-for-15 (20.0%) in the final 10 minutes, while DePaul went 4-for-18 (22.2%). The Bluejays held off DePaul with eight free throws in the final frame to collect the win, 75-68.
Joining Jensen in double digits were Emma Ronsiek and Morgan Maly with 15 points, Mallory Brake at 11 points and Molly Mogensen finishing with 10 points. DePaul got a game-high 22 points from Jorie Allen, 13 from Michelle Sidor and 10 from Anaya Peoples.
Creighton returns home for home contests against Butler (Jan. 10) and Providence (Jan. 14) in the coming week.
