SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Creighton women's soccer team won its fourth consecutive match with a 2-1 road win at Seton Hall on Thursday, Oct. 24 at Owen T. Carroll Field in South Orange, N.J.
With the win, the Bluejays improved to 8-5-1 on the season and 5-3-0 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall fell to 4-10-3 overall and 1-5-2 in league action. The Bluejays' five wins in BIG EAST play this season are the most by a Creighton squad since joining the BIG EAST in 2013 and the most since the Bluejays secured five victories in Missouri Valley Conference play in 2010.
Creighton broke through for the first goal of the match during the 7th minute of play on the third goal of the season from senior Stella Downing. The Vancouver, Canada native finished off a play with a strike from the middle of the 18-yard box that was set into motion by a free kick from junior goalkeeper Alyssa Zalac.
Earning the first assist of her collegiate career, Zalac became the first Bluejay goalkeeper to record an assist since Katie Jo Swanson notched a similar style helper in a win over CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 16, 2010.
The Bluejays pushed their lead out to 2-0 in the 20th minute when senior Ariana Mondiri headed in her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Fellow senior Maddie Radke collected her team-leading third assist of the year on the play delivering a beautiful cross into the center of the 18-yard box. Freshman Anna Bragg was also credited with an assist on the play.
Creighton's defense then took over and held the Pirates off the scoreboard until Seton Hall's Nina Davis was credited with her second goal of the season off a deflection and failed clear by the Bluejays with six second remaining.
The Bluejays closed the match with a 13-8 edge in shots, while both teams each created four corner kick opportunities. Zalac collected a pair of saves in goal, while earned her eighth win of the season.
Remaining in sole possession of third place in the BIG EAST standings, Creighton returns home on Sunday, Oct. 27 for their regular season home finale as they welcome in Butler for a 1 p.m. matchup at Morrison Stadium.
