Late Rally Lifts Creighton Baseball to 9-6 Win Over Coppin State

The victory pushed the Bluejays to 2-0 on the season, while the Eagles fell to 0-2.
Will MacLean accounted for Creighton's first run with a solo home run to right center, then got the Bluejays rolling in the sixth with a leadoff walk. Nolan Clifford followed with a two-run blast to right center as the Bluejays made it a 5-3 contest. The inning continued with a pinch-hit double by Matt Scherrman, an infield single by Kyle Hess and a walk to pinch hitter Hogan Helligso loaded the bases. Tate Gillen followed with an RBI walk, then Teddy Deters knotted the game with an RBI hit-by-pitch. The final Creighton run of the frame cross via a sacrifice fly by Jack Grace giving the Bluejays a 6-5 edge.
Coppin State pushed across the tying tally to extend the game in the seventh, but Creighton responded with three runs in the eighth to secure the win.
With two down in the eighth, Grace got things rolling with a single to left. After a walk to MacLean, Clifford laced an RBI single through the right side to score pinch runner Jack Torosian. Scherrmann drove home a pair of insurance runs with a double down the left field line pushing the advantage to 9-6.
Mason Koch earned the victory (1-0) with two innings of relief, while southpaw Shane Curtin picked up the save with a scoreless final inning. Coppin State's John Neeld took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in two innings.
Clifford was the offensive leader with two hits (2-for-3) with two runs scored and three RBI. Scherrman also finished with two hits (2-for-2) with two RBI and a run scored.
Creighton and Coppin State are underway in the series finale at Joe Cannon Stadium.
