Softball Drops Pair of Games On Saturday at Libby Matson Tournament

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Creighton softball team dropped a pair of contests on Saturday during the second day of the Libby Matson Tournament in Stockton, Calif. The Bluejays suffered a 13-0 setback to Nevada to open the day before falling 6-3 to host Pacific.
With the pair of losses, Creighton falls to 7-5 on the year.
Game 1: Nevada 13, Creighton 0 (5 innings)
The Wolf Pack led 2-0 after the first inning as Nevada used a single, walk and an two-run RBI double down the left field line by Taryn Jenkins to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
The Bluejays held Nevada scoreless in the second, but the Wolf Pack exploded for eight runs in the third on five hits, including a three-run home run from Gabby Herrera to push their advantage out to 11-0.
Nevada would tack on three additional runs on three hits and two walks in the fourth inning to secure the 13-0 victory.
The Bluejays managed just three hits in the contest, while junior Kenzie Schopfer suffered the loss in the circle for the Bluejays.
Jenkins and Chelie Senini each collected two of the Wolf Pack's combined 10 hits, while Carly Brown tossed a three-hit shutout to improve to 4-0 on the year.
Game 2: Creighton 3, Pacific 6
In game two, Creighton jumped out to an early lead only to see Pacific rally to claim a 6-3 victory.
The Bluejays wasted little time taking an early advantage as the Bluejays plated two runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Lily West got the Bluejays started with a double down the left field line, while senior Emma Rosonke drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Senior Alyssa Gappa then lined an RBI single back up the middle, scoring West from second for the first run of the game. Classmate Madeline Vejvoda followed with an RBI single of her own through the right side to give Creighton a 2-0 edge after a half inning of play.
Pacific, however, answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the first to take a 3-2 lead. A walk and three straight singles, including an RBI single through the left side by Allie Capello cut the Bluejays advantage to 2-1. A sacrifice fly from Jordan Hays drove in another run to knot things at 2-2, before an RBI single back up the middle by Talissa Montez put the Tiger out in front 3-2.
The Tigers lead stood through the second inning, but an RBI double down the left field line by Gappa in the top of the third knotted things up at 3-all.
Pacific once against responded with two runs in the bottom of the third to regain the lead. Delaney Scully drew a five-pitch walk before Capello blasted a two-run shot over the left centerfield walk to give the Tigers a 5-3 edge.
The host then added an additional run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double to left center by Emily Budelli to claim a 6-3 lead, before Desiree Smith retired retire nine of the last 10 batters to claim the victory.
Senior Jena Lawrence (2-1) took the loss, while Gappa paced the Bluejays with two hits and two RBI offensively.
Pacific was paced by a pair of hits and three RBI from Capello, while starter Scarlett Lloyd picked up her first win of the season after allowing just three runs on four hits in 4.0 innings of work.
Creighton wraps up their stay at the Libby Matson Tournament tomorrow afternoon with a contest against Stony Brook at 12 p.m. CT.
