STOCKTON, Calif. – The Creighton softball team closed out its stay at the Libby Matson Tournament with an 5-3 win over Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon in Stockton, Calif.
The win lifted the Bluejays record to 8-5 on the year, while the Seawolves fell to 4-6 overall.
Four different Bluejays recorded a pair of hits in the contest, led by sophomore Ella Dalton with a pair of doubles while senior Emma Rosonke collected a pair of singles and two RBI. Sophomore Natalia Puchino recorded the win, allowing just two earned runs and striking out five in the complete-game victory.
After a pair of scoreless frames to open the contest, the Bluejays finally broke through with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third inning. Freshman Sydney Potter got the Jays started with the first hit of her collegiate career to open the frame. Creighton then loaded the bases with a single to right by Cayla Nielsen and a nine-pitch walk by sophomore Lily West, before Rosonke delivered a two-run single up the middle to give Creighton a 2-0 lead and chase the Seawolves starting pitcher.
Stony Brook answered with a run of their own in the top half of the fourth on a single by Julianna Sanzone, a Bluejay throwing error and an RBI single down the left field line by Emily Reinstein to cut the deficit down to 2-1.
Creighton, however, regained a two-run advantage in the bottom half of the fourth as Ella Dalton lined a leadoff double into the left centerfield gap before scoring on and RBI single up the middle by Potter.
Leading 3-1 heading into the fifth inning, Creighton extended their advantage out to 5-1 with a pair of runs on a solo blast by senior Alyssa Gappa and an RBI double from Dalton.
Stony Brook showed no quit and cut the deficit to 5-3 with a two-run home run by Sanzone in the top of the sixth inning. Puchino, however, would retire the final five Seawolve batters to collect her fifth win of the season.
Creighton returns to action next week at the Cougar Invite. The Bluejays will play four games in two days, beginning with a Saturday morning contest against Loyola-Chicago.
