OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton men's tennis sophomore Yuma Daijima earned BIG EAST Male Singles Player of the Week honors, the league announced on Monday afternoon.
This marks the second straight week Daijima has earned a BIG EAST weekly honor, as he teamed up with Alejandro Gandini for BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week last week.
The sophomore posted a 2-0 record at the No. 6 singles slot last week, helping the Bluejays split a pair of matches against previously unbeaten Youngstown State (W, 5-2) and former Missouri Valley Conference rival, Drake (L, 4-3).
The Tokyo, Japan native opened the 2-0 week with a 6-2, 6-2 straight-sets victory over YSU's Asier Ibanez on Friday afternoon. Daijima then followed Friday's performance with an impressive 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 triumph over Drake's Benjamin Johnson on Saturday.
Daijima has now won five straight singles matches and improved his overall record to 6-1 with the pair of victories. He has also won four straight doubles matches with Gandini at the No. 3 doubles position and holds a 5-1 overall record.
The Creighton men's tennis team returns to action on Friday, Feb. 9 when the Bluejays hosts Montana State at the Hanscom Tennis Courts with first serve scheduled for 9 a.m.
