OMAHA, Neb. --Â It is tough to beat a team three times, and Sunday's second game proved that to be true. After claiming an 9-2 win in game one of Sunday's doubleheader, the Creighton baseball team dropped a 6-3 decision to Portland in the final game of the series.Â
Â
The loss moved Creighton to 11-2 on the year, while Portland improved to 8-5 overall with the victory.Â
Â
Zooming through the first two and a half innings of play, Creighton drew first blood with a single run in the bottom half of the third to take a 1-0 lead. Following a two-out single by Tate Gillen, junior Nolan Sailors lined an RBI triple deep into the right center field gap to put the Bluejays on the scoreboard.Â
Â
Portland, however, answered with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, highlighted by a two-run shot by Jonas Salk and a solo homer to left by Zach Toglia to grab a 6-1 lead.
Â
Down to their final three outs, Creighton plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI fielder's choice and a Portland throwing error to cut the lead to 6-3, but it wasn't enough as the Pilots recorded a groundout to second to secure the victory.Â
Â
The Bluejays managed just five hits in the contest, led by a pair of base knocks by Scherrman. Freshman Jack Pineau suffered his first loss of the season, allowing three runs on three hits in 4.0 innings of work.Â
Â
Creighton returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 12 when the Bluejays take on Omaha at 6 p.m. from Charles Schwab Field Omaha.Â
