Palo Alto, Calif. -- Behind seven strong innings from Dominic Cancellieri and two RBI from Nolan Sailors, Creighton Baseball defeated Stanford 3-2 in the opening game of a three-game set with the Cardinal on Saturday, March 23.
The win moved the Bluejays to 16-3 on the season, while Stanford fell to 9-10.
Creighton soared out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Tate Gillen opened the game with a four-pitch walk, then Sailors drilled an RBI triple to left-center. Colby Canales followed with an RBI single to right-center as the Bluejays seized the early momentum.
Stanford answered with single runs in the first and second frames, but that was all Cancellieri allowed in seven strong innings.
Knotted at 2-2, Sailors answered the bell in the third. Teddy Deters set things in motion with a two-out double to left-center, then Sailors laced an RBI double down the left field line to put Creighton back up 3-2.
Over the next five innings Cancellieri was dominant as the New Jersey native faced just 16 batters to take the game to the eighth.
Southpaw reliever Shane Curtin took things from there with two shutdown frames to earn his second save of the season.
Cancellieri earned the win (5-0), limited the Cardinal to two runs on six hits and one walk. Stanford starter Matt Scott took the loss (2-4), allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over seven innings.
Sailors closed the game with three hits, just a home run shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Creighton and Stanford will continue their three-game series on Sunday, March 24 with a 3:05 p.m. contest.
