Men’s Tennis Hangs On For 4-3 Win At Xavier

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Creighton men's tennis team soared out to an early lead before hanging on for a 4-3 victory over Xavier on Saturday afternoon in Cincinnati, Ohio.
With the win, the Bluejays improved to 11-6 overall and 3-2 in BIG EAST play, while the Musketeers' fell to 2-13 on the season and 1-2 in league play.
Creighton earned the first point of the match, securing doubles victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Senior Shin Inoue and sophomore Zachary Kuo teamed up for a 6-4 win at the No. 2 doubles spot, while sophomore's Kirtan Patel and Yuma Daijima quickly earned a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 doubles spot.
In singles play, the Bluejays and Musketeers went back and forth before Creighton came out on top with a 4-3 victory.
Daijima picked up a 6-4, 6-3 straight-set victory at the No. 5 singles positions to give Creighton a 2-0 lead, but Xavier stormed back with three-set wins at the No. 3 and No. 6 singles positions to level the match at 2-2.
Senior Matthew Lanahan would then give Creighton the lead once again with a 3-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 win at the No. 1 singles position before Xavier's Pascal Mosberger captured a three-set win on the No. 2 singles court to tie the match again at 3-3.
Coming down to the final match, Creighton's Alejandro Gandini overcame a one-set deficit, claiming a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 triumph at the No. 4 singles position to clinch the overall match for the Bluejays.
"It was another really tough road test this afternoon," said head coach Gerhard Posch. "We still have a lot to work on and will do so in the coming weeks as we prepare for the BIG EAST Tournament."
The Bluejays will return to the court for a BIG EAST conference matchup against Marquette on Friday, March 29 at 1 p.m. in Milwaukee, Wis.
