COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Creighton men's tennis team fell to Georgetown, 6-1, on Monday afternoon at the Junior Tennis Championship Center in College Park, Md.
The Bluejays dropped to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in BIG EAST play with the loss, while the Hoyas improved to 9-3 and 1-1 in league player with the victory.
The host Hoyas earned the doubles point with wins at the top two spots. The Bluejays took the early advantage as junior Alejandro Gandini and sophomore Yuma Daijima captured a 6-1 at the No. 3 doubles position. The Hoyas, however, rallied with a 6-3 triumph at the No. 1 doubles spot before clinching the first point of the afternoon with a 7-5 win on doubles court No. 2.
Daijima earned the Bluejays only point of the match with a 6-4, 7-6 (7) straight-sets victory over Georgetown's Sahil Morey at the No. 6 singles position.
Georgetown secured the dual with a trio of straight-set wins at the top three singles positions and a pair of three-set triumphs at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots. Senior Shin Inoue claimed a 7-5 victory in set one, but Georgetown's Adhvyte Sharma answered with a 6-2 win in set two to force a decisive third set. Sharma would claim the match with a 6-2 third set win.
Gandini also earned a 6-4 win in his opening set of single play, but faltered in set two, 6-4. The Hoyas' Kierana Foster then captured a 10-8 tiebreaker win to secure the 6-1 victory.
"The team battled but came up short today," said head coach Gerhard Posch. "What we learned was that we'll have to prepare a lot more diligently to be able to compete hard while we are on the road."
The Bluejays return to the courts on Wednesday, March 6 for a match in New York City against St. John's. First serve between the Bluejays and Red Storm is set for 12 p.m.
