Clifford and Sailors Smash Homers in 13-8 Win over UMass Lowell

The victory moved Creighton to 9-1 on the season, while the River Hawks fell to 3-9.
Trailing 2-0 after the first, Clifford knotted the game at 2-2 with his third home run of the season, blasting a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall. The Bluejays, however, trailed 5-2 as the game moved to the second. The offense gave a decisive response once more as Will MacLean and Matt Scherrman singled, then Sam Vomhof walked and Connor Capece lifted a deep sac fly to left to move each runner 90 feet. With two down Sailors launched a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall for his fourth home run of the season and second in as many games. Before the inning closed the Bluejays tacked on two more runs, getting an RBI double from Teddy Deters and an RBI single by MacLean to take an 8-5 lead.
Creighton took advantage of a bases loaded three-base error in the fourth to push its lead to 12-5 and went on to claim the 13-8 victory.
Senior Daniel Hammond earned the win (2-0) with two innings of scoreless relief, while River Hawk starter Frankie Venezia allowed eight runs on five hits and three walks in 1.2 innings to take the loss (0-1). Seven Bluejays saw the mound in the contest, while six River Hawks went to the bump.
Scherrman led the Bluejay attack with three hits (3-for-4), while MacLean and Sailors each delivered two hits in the win.
The Bluejays return to action on Friday, March 8 as Creighton begins a three-game series with Portland at 6:00 p.m. at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
