ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Creighton women's tennis narrowly fell to Villanova, 4-3, during a BIG EAST matchup at the USTA National Campus on Wednesday afternoon in Orlando, Fla.
The Bluejays dropped to 7-5 on the year and 1-1 in BIG EAST play, while the Wildcats improved to 3-7 overall and 1-0 in league action.
Wednesday's match needed eight matches to decide a winner, including a dramatic three-set match at the No. 3 singles to clinch the match.
With the match knotted at 3-3, all attention was on the No. 3 singles court as sophomore Ana Paula Martinez battled back from an early one-set deficit to level the match with a 7-6 (7-2) win in the second frame. With the overall dual on the line, both Martinez and Villanova's Miriam Gondorova battled back-and-forth until Gondorova pulled away late to earn a 6-4 victory and clinch the overall dual for the Wildcats.
Creighton earned the first point of the match with wins at the top two doubles positions. Senior Malvika Shukla and junior Valerie Negin recorded their fourth straight doubles victory, teaming up for a 6-4 victory at the No. 1 doubles position, while senior Bianca Rademacher and junior Siri Kongara cruised to a 6-0 triumph at the No. 2 doubles slot.
Villinova, however, started singles play with an extra boost of energy and took a 3-1 lead in the match with straight-set victories at the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 singles position.
Creighton responded with a straight-sets win of their own at the No. 5 singles position and a three set win at the No. 2 singles slot to level the match at 3-3 before Villanova captured the victory. Sophomore Annika Elvestrom claimed a 6-4, 6-0 triumph on the No. 5 singles court, while Negin captured a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win at the No. 2 singles spot.
"Our girls competed hard today in a three-and-a-half-hour match," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Credit goes out to Villanova for being a little bit better than us today. We will need to try and finish our spring break trip strong tomorrow against a solid Saint Joseph's team."
Creighton wraps up their stay in the Sunshine state on Thursday with a match against Saint Joseph's at 10 a.m. from the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
