Baseball Returns To BIG EAST Action at Xavier this Weekend

Omaha, Neb. -- Coming off a 7-6 win over local rival Omaha on Tuesday, Creighton Baseball (25-5) returns to BIG EAST play over the weekend as the Bluejays compete in their first conference road series of the season at Xavier.
Series History with Musketeers (Bluejays trail 19-18)
Xavier has undoubtedly become the nemesis of the Bluejays since joining the BIG EAST. Ironically Creighton has done better at Xavier, taking seven of the 12 games at Hayden Field.

Scouting the Bluejays
(2024: 24-5, 2-1 BIG EAST)
The Bluejays continued to roll last week, claiming five wins in six games. The highlight came last Tuesday as the Bluejays upset
#24 Nebraska 5-3 in the first of three midweek contests with the Huskers.
As a team the Bluejays are hitting .308, led individually by Nolan Clifford (.414) and Nolan Sailors (.384). Four other Bluejays enter the week with an average over .300 (Teddy Deters (.336), Tate Gillen (.319), Ben North (.323), Colby Canales (.304).
On the bump the Bluejays have a team ERA of 4.35, led by an impressive 1.33, 2.35 and two at 2.70 ERA from relievers Eli Nissen, Shane Curtin Daniel Hammond and Mason Koch.
Scouting the Musketeers
(2024: 15-17, 1-2 BIG EAST)
Known for consistently playing one of the toughest schedules, the
Musketeers always enter BIG EAST play as a battle tested team. The 2024 squad seems poised to follow that path as Xavier holds a win over LSU this season and took the opening game of the conference season from Connecticut last weekend.
Xavier enters the week with an average of .270 as a team, led by Hayden Christiansen (.294), Matt McCormick (.286), Matthew DePrey (.280) and Luke Hammond (.280).
On the mound Xavier has a team ERA of 6.32 with 270 strikeouts in 275.0 innings.
Lamb Notches Seven Straight Strikeouts
Senior Tommy Lamb was untouchable in his 2.1 inning relief effort on Tuesday, April 9 as the Wisconsin native struck out seven consecutive Mavericks in Creighton's 7-6 win over Omaha. Entering with two down and runners at the corners in the fourth, Lamb hit the first batter he faced to load the bases. He went on to strike out Omaha's Tyler Bishop on three pitches to close the frame. Over the next two innings Lamb set down the Mavericks in order with three strikeouts looking and three swinging. Lamb finished the outing with 24 strikes in 39 pitches.
The last time a Bluejay struck out seven consecutive hitters was in 2022, when Dominic Cancellieri opened a start against St. Thomas with seven strikeouts on March 6, 2022.
Magic Number Is Four in 2024
Off to a 25-5 start Creighton is 24-0 in games the team has scored at least four runs. Another statistical anomaly is three of the Bluejays' five losses have come by a 6-3 score. The victories haven't just been blowouts either as Creighton is 4-0 in one-run games in 2024.
Homecoming for Deters
Bluejay right fielder Teddy Deters will be returning to his old stomping grounds this weekend. Deters spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons as a Musketeer, playing a combined 26 games for Xavier. During his time as a Musketeer Deters hit .314 with two homers and 10 RBI.
