Women’s Tennis Earns No. 5 Seed For BIG EAST Championships, Opens Play Against UConn

OMAHA, Neb. – Fresh off a runner-up finish in last year's BIG EAST Championships, the Creighton women's tennis team has earned the No. 5 seed for the upcoming 2024 BIG EAST Tournament Presented by JEEP in Cayce, S.C., the league announced on Monday afternoon. The Bluejays will open tournament play on Friday at 3:30 p.m. (CT) against fourth-seeded UConn.
Entering the week on a five-match winning streak, Creighton finished the regular season with a 14-6 overall record, including a 2-2 mark against BIG EAST opponents. The Bluejays lone BIG EAST wins this season came versus Seton Hall (5-2) in Orlando, Fla. and at Marquette (4-3).
UConn enters Friday's matchup with a 12-7 overall record, which includes a 4-3 mark against BIG EAST competition this season. The Huskies have captured BIG EAST wins over Butler (4-3), Providence (7-0) and Villanova (4-3), as well as a 7-0 sweep of Seton Hall in their most recent contest.
Creighton and UConn have met two times previously with the Bluejays coming out on top both times. The two teams met last season in the BIG EAST quarterfinals with Creighton advancing to the semifinals with a 4-2 victory.
Senior Malvika Shukla leads the Bluejays with 26 victories this season. The Mumbia, India native has claimed 13 victories at the top singles position, while also teaming up with junior Valerie Negin for 11 wins at the top doubles position. Along with her success in doubles, Negin has also contributed 10 wins in singles play.
Sophomore Annika Elvestrom has also been a force for the Bluejays this season, racking up a combined 23 victories. The Minnesota native has claimed a team-best 14 victories across the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions. She has also combined for nine doubles wins this year.
Battled by injuries throughout the season, senior Bianca Rademacher made the most out of her time on the court. The Lincoln product has posted a 9-1 record in singles play and enters the week riding an eight-match winning streak. She has also combined for seven doubles win at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions.
Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center will host the BIG EAST Championships for the sixth straight year. The Facility offers 30 lighted world-class courts with a championship-sized stadium court that has a viewing capacity of approximately 500 spectators.
Seeding for the championships were determined by a committee that reviews each team's regular-season schedule, ITA ranking, results against BIG EAST and common non-conference opponents and wins/losses against ranked foes.
The Men's and Women's Championship matches will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) on FloSports. The Men's Championship broadcast begins at 9 a.m. ET on Sunday, and the Women's Championship coverage starts at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
