Lincoln, Neb. -- Teddy Deters delivered a historic moment in his first season as a Bluejay, blasting a grand slam in the top of the ninth inning to lift Creighton to a 6-4 win over Nebraska on Tuesday, April 16.
The win pushed Creighton to 27-7, while Nebraska fell to 23-11.
Trailing 3-2 entering the top of the ninth the Bluejays sent Matt Scherrman to the plate as a pinch-hitter. Scherrman belted a 1-2 pitch to right field. Just as Scherrman did, Nolan Sailors fell behind 0-2 but laced a single through the left side. One out later Nolan Clifford worked a walk to set the stage for Deters. Nebraska countered by bringing Rans Sanders in from the bullpen. The first pitch of the at-bat was blasted to center, his second home run of the game.
The game wasn't quite over as with two down in the bottom of the ninth, Nebraska go put a pair on courtesy on a pinch-hit RBI single from Tyler Stone and a pinch-hit RBI double to left field from Clay Bradford that came within a few inches of knotting the game. Bluejay closer Mason Koch struck out pinch hitter Max Buettenback to give the Bluejays the series win over Nebraska.
Koch moved to 3-0 on the season as he limited Nebraska to one run on two hits with four strikeouts in the final two frames. Nebraska reliever Kyle Perry took the loss (1-1), allowing three runs on two hits and a walk in one-third of an inning.
Deters was the leader at the plate with two home runs, five RBI and two runs scored.
Playing with a howling wind blowing out to left, pitchers controlled the first three innings as the game moved to the fourth locked in a scoreless battle. Creighton struck first with a solo home run by Teddy Deters in the top of the fourth, but Nebraska answered with a solo blast from Josh Caron in the bottom of the frame.
Nebraska surged ahead with two runs in the sixth with a pair of runs on two hits. Dylan Carey benefited from a wind aided single as the ball carried out of the reach of Bluejay infielder Kyle Hess. After a walk to Case Sanderson, Caron delivered once more with an RBI double to left center. A sacrifice fly from Cole Evans made it 3-1 for the Huskers.
Creighton threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with a single from Ben North, a walk to Kyle Hess and a single to center by Nolan Sailors. Nebraska, however, wiggled off the hook with a strikeout of Hogan Helligso, a line drive by Nolan Clifford was snagged by first baseman Ben Columbus and Deters grounded out.
The Bluejays drew closer on a solo home run from Colby Canales in the top of the eighth to make it 3-2.
The Bluejays return to action as BIG EAST play resumes this weekend at Villanova. The three-game set with the Wildcats is set to begin on Friday, April 19 at 2:00 p.m.
NOTES:
Creighton's only other player with 2 homers or 5 RBI in a game at Hawks Field is Tony Daniel in the 2005 NCAA Tournament ... Daniel did it against NC State. That was also CU's only previous grand slam at Hawks Field before Teddy Deters tonight.
