Women’s Tennis Ends Season in BIG EAST Championships Quarterfinals
4/20/2024 4:03:00 PM | Women's Tennis
CAYCE, S.C. – The No. 5 seed Creighton women's tennis team had its season come to an end following a 4-0 loss to No. 4 seeded UConn in the quarterfinals of the 2024 BIG EAST Championships Presented by Jeep at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center in Cayce, S.C.
The Bluejays closed out the season with a 14-7 overall record, while the Huskies improve to 13-7 on the year and advanced to Sunday's semifinals match against top-seeded Xavier.
UConn earned the first point of the day, earning wins at the top two doubles positions. Olivia Wright and Maria Constantinou teamed up for a 6-1 win at the No. 1 doubles slot, while Caroline Hinshaw and Isabel Petri Bere earned a 6-3 win at the No. 2 doubles position to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, UConn claimed victories at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles positions to clinch the overall dual 4-0.
UConn's Cameron Didion captured a 6-2, 6-0 straight-sets win at the No. 4 singles spot, while Olivia Wright claimed a 7-6, 6-3 win at the top singles positions. Maria Constantinou then clinched the overall match with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 three-sets win at the No. 2 singles spot.
"This team has a lot of fight all year and were a pleasure to coach," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Today just wasn't in the cards for us. We competed but just lacked an edge that you must have against a tough team like UConn. Credit goes out to UConn for outplaying and out coaching us today. Unfortunately, we just came up short in too many tight points."
Saturday afternoon marked the final collegiate match for Bluejay seniors Malvika Shukla and Jeanne Gearity. The duo combined for 133 total wins over their four years with the Bluejays. Shukla finished her Bluejay career with 125 career wins, ranking fifth all-time on the Creighton all-time wins list.
