Bluejay Baseball Battles Hoyas In Critical Weekend Series
4/25/2024 12:16:00 PM | Baseball
Omaha, Neb. -- At 30-9 it may seem odd to refer to the weekend series with Georgetown as critical, but that is exactly the case as Creighton Baseball has one of its best overall records in school history but sits on the outside looking in for the BIG EAST Tournament at 4-5 in conference action. With two home series and two road series remaining on the schedule, each series takes on added meaning. Georgetown comes to Omaha at 27-13 overall and 8-4 in BIG EAST play.

Scouting the Bluejays
(2024: 30-9, 4-5 BIG EAST)
Coming off a two-game sweep of #13 Coastal Carolina, Creighton has some momentum. Despite the Bluejays 30-9 record, the weekend series with Georgetown is critical. Creighton enters the weekend in fifth in BIG EAST play and just four teams reach the conference tournament.
As a team the Bluejays are hitting .301, led individually by Nolan Sailors (.393), Nolan Clifford (.381) and Teddy Deters (.336). On the bump the Bluejays have a team ERA of 4.85, with 340 strikeouts in 339.1 innings.
Scouting the Hoyas
(2024: 27-13, 8-4 BIG EAST)
Georgetown comes to Omaha after suffering a three-game sweep by Connecticut last weekend. The Hoyas took their midweek battle with George Washington 13-5 on Tuesday.
The Hoyas began BIG EAST action against Villanova, Seton Hall and Butler, getting off to an 8-1 start.
As a team Georgetown is hitting .297, led by Christian Ficca (.357), Joe Hollerbach (.333) and Josh Rolling (.331). Playing in a more hitter friendly ballpark the Hoyas have 48 home runs on the season.
On the bump the Hoyas have a team ERA of 4.65 with 302 strikeouts in 352 innings. A strength for Georgetown is the back end of the bullpen as six pitchers have at least one save, led by six from Nick Davis and four by Kai Leckszas.
Hess the Hero
Entering the finale with #13 Coastal Carolina, Kyle Hess was hitting .257 with nine RBI. Coming to the plate with the Bluejays' down 4-2 with two down in the bottom of the eighth, he created a new nickname. Hess lined a two-run triple past third base and down the left field line to knot the game at 4-4. In his next at bat the Hess lifted the game-winning single into right-center, giving the Bluejays a sweep of the Chanticleers with his second three RBI game of the season.
Bullpen Near Perfect Against #13 Coastal Carolina
Facing one of the top offenses in the country, the Creighton bullpen showed its tenacity as the Bluejay pen limited #13 Coastal Carolina to one run on seven hits over 16 innings.
Tuesday starter Shea Wendt allowed three runs over two innings (all three coming in the first frame), while Wednesday starter Chad Saner also allowed three runs in one inning.
Although the tandem of Wendt and Saner allowed six combined runs, Creighton pitchers did not give up one extra base hit over 19 frames against the Chanticleers.
Bluejays Remain Undefeated in Midweek Battles
Including the two wins over #13 Coastal Carolina this week, Creighton moved to 10-0 in midweek contests. Three of those 10 wins have come over ranked foes.
Â
Importance of the Georgetown Series
The weekend series with the Hoyas will be the tenth time the two schools have faced off since Creighton joined the BIG EAST.
