Bluejays with best individual and team performances since joining the BIG EAST
HARDEEVILLE, S.C. -- The Creighton men's golf program had its best showing ever at the BIG EAST Championship Presented by JEEP, taking third as a team, with senior Shaun Campbell finishing as runner-up on Monday at Riverton Pointe Golf and Country Club in Hardeeville, S.C.
The Bluejays shot a 3-under round of 285 on Monday, its best round at the league championships since joining the BIG EAST in 2013. Coupled with its rounds of 298 and 296, that 879 total placed the Jays third of 10 teams, just seven shots behind Seton Hall (292-292-288=872) and Butler (295-291-291=877). The 879 was CU's second-best 54-hole total in a league championship ever, trailing only an 869 fired two years ago.
Creighton's third-place showing was its best team finish at a league championship since also taking third at the 2007 Missouri Valley Conference Championship.
Campbell started Monday in a tie for 10th place, then birdied three of his first seven holes to vault into the lead. Campbell birdied 12 and 14 and was the clubhouse leader for more than an hour until eventual medalist Peicheng Chen of St. John's parred the final seven holes to earn the one-shot victory. Chen began his day with a double-bogey and bogey before mixing in 13 pars and three birdies the rest of the way.
Campbell's 215 total was the second-best 54 hole total by a Bluejay at the BIG EAST Championship, and a huge upgrade over his 35th place finish in 2022 and 25th place standing a year ago. CU's last top-two finish at a league tournament was also in 2007, as John Sutko won medalist honors at the 2007 Missouri Valley Conference championship. Campbell is also the first Bluejay with six Top 10 finishes in a season since Sutko's seven in 2006-07.
The BIG EAST Championship performance by Campbell lowered his career scoring average to 73.01, the best by any Bluejay in the last 20 years with 30 rounds or more. It also saw him finish the season with a 72.04 scoring average, two strokes (over 31 rounds) better than Grant Feldman's 72.11 average.
Charlie Zielinski closed out his career by taking eighth place, bookending rounds of 71 with a 76. It was the senior's third straight Top 10 finish at the BIG EAST Championship after finishing third in 2022 and fourth a year ago.
Freshman Owen Price tied for 13th place in his initial appearance at the BIG EAST Championship. Price compiled circuits of 74, 76 and 72 for a 222 total.
Feldman tied for 21st place, improving each day. The sophomore followed up his 79 on Saturday with scores of 73 and 72 for a 224 aggregate. That's a 15-spot improvement over his 38th place showing a year ago.
Jackson Thompson started the tournament with loops of 85 and 83 before wrapping up his career with a 75 to place 44th with a 243 total.
The event was played on the Par 72 layout at Riverton Pointe Golf and Country Club, which measured 7,158 yards. The competition included 10 teams and 55 individuals in search of a league title.
Creighton will return to the course in the fall seeking to improve upon its 289.07 team scoring average that was easily its best in the last 20 years, and a seven-shot improvement over a year ago.
