Natalia Puchino named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton Softball's Lily West has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week after guiding the Bluejays to a perfect 4-0 record with a win over Omaha and a series sweep over DePaul last week in Omaha.
West is the second Bluejay this season to earn BIG EAST Player of the Week honors, joining Madeline Vejvoda (April 8). Fellow sophomore Natalia Puchino was also named to this week's BIG EAST Weekly honor roll.
West, a Choctaw, Okla. native, started all four games behind the plate, recording a .538 batting average (7-of-13) and a .846 slugging percentage with a double and home run while collecting five RBI, two walks and four runs scored.
After opening the week with a 2-for-3 showing with an RBI and run scored in the Bluejays' 7-3 win over Omaha, West started the Bluejays weekend series against DePaul with a single to help secure a 2-1 victory.
The sophomore standout then closed the series with a pair of multi-hit games, recording a 2-for-4 performance in the Bluejays' 7-4 win in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday. West then followed with another 2-for-3 showing in the series finale, recording a double and a three-run home run to guide the Jays to an 8-1 win over DePaul on Sunday.
This season West has started all 50 games for the Bluejays and currently leads the team with 30 runs scored, while recording a .331 batting average on 53 hits including 10 doubles and three home runs.
Puchino earned BIG EAST Honor Roll recognition after factoring into the decision of all three games against DePaul. The sophomore right hander posted a 2-0 record with a save while recording a 0.88 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 16.0 innings of work.
The Milliken, Colo. native earned her 21st win of the season, firing a complete-game with nine strikeouts, including collecting the 250th punchout of her Bluejay career, while allowing just one run on five hits in the Bluejays'2-1 win over DePaul on Saturday. Puchino then provided 2.0 scoreless innings of relief in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday to collect her fourth save of the season.
Closing out the series on Sunday, Puchino tossed yet another complete game, striking out three in the Jays' 8-1 win to earn her 22nd win of the season.
Overall, Puchino has recorded a 22-5 record and leads the BIG EAST with a 1.80 ERA and league-best 148 strikeouts this season. Her 22 wins are tied with Bluejay hall of famer Kelly Brookhart for the seventh most wins in a single season, while her four saves are tied with April Trupp for the fifth most in a single season in program history.
West, Puchino and the rest of the Creighton softball team will look to continue their winning streak this weekend when they close out regular-season play with a three-game series against Providence at the Creighton Sports Complex.
