Women's Golf Opens Season in Sixth Place at MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Creighton women's golf team finished in sixth place at the season-opening MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial on Tuesday in Springfield, Mo.
Sophomores Annie Dawson and Katharine Marshall led three Bluejays in the top 20. Dawson shot rounds of 79, 72 and 76 for a 227 total to finish in a tie for 15th place. Her score was four shots better than her collegiate debut last fall in the same event, when the Phoenix, Ariz., native tied for 51st place. Marshall compiled circuits of 73, 77 and 77 to also tie for 15th place with a 227 overall after tying for 29th place in the tournament last fall.
Newcomer Morgan Becker (78-73-77=228) tied for 18th overall. A junior, Becker is a transfer from Oklahoma Baptist University, where she was an All-Great American Conference performer.
Freshman Julia Karmazin made her Bluejay debut with a tie for 38th place following loops of 77, 75 and 82 for a 234 aggregate. Fellow newcomer Kinsley Smith, playing as an individual, also tied for 38th place after shooting 76, 79, 79 on the Twin Oaks Country Club Par 71 layout that measured 6,070 yards.
Rounding out the Bluejay line-up was Karsen Morrison, who bounced back after an opening-round 85 to shoot loops of 80 and 76 to tie for 54th place.
Omaha junior Katie Ruge won the 67-player tournament with scores of 69, 67 and 70 for the 7-under total of 206. She finished six shots ahead of Missouri State's Coyee Zhang (67-73-72=212) and Oral Roberts' Kate Strickland (65-70-78=213), who led after 36 holes.
Omaha (294-284-294=872) won the 12-team event by nine shots with an 872 total to top Oral Roberts (293-285-303=881) and North Dakota State (297-288-296=881).
Creighton returns to the course on Sept. 16-17 at the Kelsey Chugg Invitational in Eden, Utah. The Bluejays won the tournament the last time it played in that event in the fall of 2022.
