OMAHA, Neb. -- Bolstered by a second half penalty kick goal from sophomore Anja Jestrovic, the Creighton Women's Soccer team posted a 1-0 senior day shutout win over Kansas City to close out non-conference play on Sunday, Sept. 15.
With the senior day victory, the Bluejays improved their overall record to 3-2-1 while the Roos dropped their first match of the season, falling to 5-1-3 overall.
The first period began with defense from both squads to complete the half at a 0-0 score. Several scoring opportunities were presented to the Bluejays during the opening 45 minutes but resulted in near misses and three saves credited to Kansas City goalkeeper Maddie Sibbing. Senior Stella Downing created the first scoring chance for the Bluejays in the fourth minute as she slid past two Roo defenders before blasting a dart to the left side of the net that was deflected in a diving save by Sibbing.
Less than four minutes later, sophomore Clara Kulick nearly gave the Jays a 1-0 lead lofting a shot from roughly 25-yards out towards the top-right corner of the goal, but a leaping fingertip save from Sibbing pushed the chance out of play, keeping the contest scoreless.
In the net, senior Alyssa Zalac made two saves for the Creighton including a key deflection in the 39th minute on a shot from Adriana Benassi in the box. Creighton went into the half with a favorable 7-2 lead in shot attempts and a 5-0 edge in corner kicks created.
After more defensive play in the second half, Creighton was finally able to break through in the 63rd minute (62:27) as Jestrovic drew a penalty in the box on her forward attack. Jestrovic converted the penalty kick by sliding in a quick roller to the bottom left of the net which resulted in her first goal of the season.
The Bluejays kept pressing on the offensive end of the pitch throughout the reminder of the contest, nearly taking a 2-0 lead in the 80th minute as senior Greta narrowly missed a laser that deflected off the crossbar from 35 yards out right, while Jestrovic recovered the loose ball and pepped Sibbing before the Roos' where able to clear the ball.
Creighton closed the match with a sizable 17-7 lead in shots, while retaining a 5-3 advantage in corners attempted. Zalac shined once again in goal for the Bluejays, recording her second consecutive shutout and her third clean sheet of the season.
