
Wurtz & Maeder Earn Weekly BIG EAST VB Honors

OMAHA, Neb. -- Two members of the BIG EAST champion Creighton Volleyball team were recognized by the BIG EAST Conference in the final edition of weekly awards on Monday. Nora Wurtz was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, while Annalea Maeder earned her seventh BIG EAST Setter of the Week accolade.
Wurtz averaged 2.17 kills, 1.67 blocks, 0.50 aces and 0.50 digs per set while hitting .722 to help Creighton finish off an unbeaten BIG EAST season. The redshirt freshman hit .667 and tied her career-highs with six kills and five blocks in Friday's win at St. John's, adding three aces to tie the league record for aces in conference play entering 2025. She followed that with five more blocks and upped her season-high to seven kills on .778 hitting in Saturday's victory at Seton Hall. Wurtz led the BIG EAST in hitting percentage and was second in blocks per set last week.
This is Wurtz's first career weekly recognition from the BIG EAST.
Maeder did her part to help Creighton secure a 12th straight BIG EAST regular-season title as she averaged 10.33 assists, 1.17 kills, 1.00 digs, 0.83 aces and 0.33 blocks per set while also hitting .778.
The Ried, Switzerland native had 37 assists, five digs, three kills and two blocks in Friday's 3-0 win at St. John's that saw the Bluejays set a league record with their 46th straight regular-season BIG EAST victory. She then had 25 assists, five aces and had four kills in as many swings during a 3-0 win at Seton Hall as the Jays finished off a second straight unbeaten league season. Creighton had 31 kills in the match before making its first attack error and hit a program-record .551 in the contest.
Maeder led all BIG EAST players in assists per set and was tied for third in aces per set last week. As a team, Creighton hit a league-leading .477and shared the BIG EAST lead with 14.00 kills per set.
No. 12 Creighton (23-5) opens the postseason on Saturday as the top seed in the BIG EAST Championships, Presented by JEEP. The Bluejays will meet tournament host and fourth-seeded Marquette (17-9) at Noon in semifinal round action at Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee, Wis.
