OMAHA, Neb. – For the second time in his Creighton career, junior Yuma Daijima has been named BIG EAST Male Singles Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday, Feb. 10.
Daijima posted a 1-0 record at the top singles position this week, helping guide the Bluejays to its first victory over former Missouri Valley Conference rival Drake since at least 2007.
The Tokyo, Japan native remained perfect in singles play this season, battling to a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 win at the No. 2 singles spot over Drake's Ben Johnson.
With the win, Daijima improved to 7-0 on the year and is now 23-3 is singles play in his Bluejay career. He has also won three consecutive doubles matches, improving to 5-1 in doubles this spring.
This marks the fourth BIG EAST weekly honor for Daijima in his career and his second BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week accolade, as he also earned BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week on Feb. 2, 2024. Daijima and senior Alejandro Gandini have also teamed up to earn two BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week honors, including the first acclaim this season.
Daijima and the rest of the Bluejays will return to the court on Tuesday, February 11, when they begin a four-match homestand against Nebraska-Kearney at 6:30 p.m. at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
