Women’s Tennis Downs Western Illinois, 5-2

GALESBURG, Ill. – The Creighton women's tennis team continues its winning ways on Saturday night, claiming a 5-2 victory over Western Illinois at the Lakeside Recreation Facility in Galesburg, Ill.
The Bluejays improved to 6-2 on the season with the win, while the Leathernecks fell to 3-4 overall.
"We didn't play our best tennis this weekend, but we had good fight," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Today was another battle and again we had to use our depth with some injuries to starters, so it was good to see them come through. Playing with four freshmen is the starting lineup of singles was a bit scary, but we got the job done."
Creighton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match as they quickly claimed victories on the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles courts. Senior's Valerie Negin and Bianca Rademacher captured their seventh consecutive victory with a 6-2 win at the top doubles spot, before freshmen Karli Vo and Alem Cote sealed the first point of the match with a 6-3 triumph at the No. 3 doubles position.
The Bluejays continued to pull away early into singles play, earning straight-set wins on the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles court to secure the victory.
Rademacher improved to an impressive 7-0 at the top singles spot, capturing a 6-1, 6-2 win, while Negin followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win of her own to give Creighton a 3-0 advantage.
Western Illinois got on the board with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 three-set victory on the No. 3 court, before Cote rallied from a set deficit to pick up a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 win on the No. 4 singles court to clinch the overall dual for the Bluejays.
Freshman Olivia Minikel added in a 6-4, 6-4 straight sets win at the No. 6 singles position, before WIU's Nour Gueblaoui edged out Annika Elvestrom, 7-6, 3-6, 10-8, on the No. 5 singles court to close the match.
