CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Creighton women's tennis team continues its winning ways, cruising to a 7-0 sweep over Gustavus Adolphus on Sunday morning in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Creighton pushed its win streak out to three matches and improved to 3-1 on the season with the win, while Gustavus Adolphus dropped its season-opener, falling to 0-1 overall.
The Bluejays lost just four games during doubles action as Ana Paula Martinez and Olivia Minikel combined for their fourth win of the season at the No. 2 doubles position with a 6-0 victory over Bethany Smith and Molly Austin. Valerie Negin and Bianca Rademacher then clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at the top spot to give the Bluejays the early 1-0 advantage. Freshman Pippa Roy and sophomore Elsa Jurrens also cruised to a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 doubles position.
Creighton continued it dominant performance into singles play, as the Bluejays captured straight-set victories at all six positions.
Freshman Alem Cote earned the first singles point for the Bluejays following a quick 6-0, 6-0 victory on the No. 4 singles court. Jurrens followed suit and posted an identical 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 6 singles spot to push Creighton's advantage out to 3-0.
Rademacher continued her strong singles play with a match-clinching 6-0, 6-3 victory at the top singles spot, while Martinez captured a 6-1, 6-2 triumph on the No. 3 singles court. Negin then claimed a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Kaya De Brvija at the No. 2 singles position, moments before freshman Karli Vo clinched the sweep with a 6-4, 6-2 victory on the No. 5 singles court.
"Another solid match today," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Gustavus traditionally plays tough doubles, and we needed to compete to get that point. We did a good job of handling a few tough spots and were also able to play everyone that was healthy today."
Creighton will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. when they visit former MVC rival Drake in Des Moines, Iowa.
