Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Portland

Creighton Takes Opener 5-2, Falls 10-9 in Nightcap
Portland, Ore. -- Creighton Baseball split its series opening doubleheader with Portland on Friday, February 21 with the Bluejays taking the first game 5-2 and Portland snagging the nightcap 10-9.
Following the results on Friday, Creighton moved to 2-3 and Portland to 2-4 on the season.
Game 1: Creighton 5, Portland 2
Down 1-0 entering the top of the third, Creighton pulled even on a sac fly from Teddy Deters. The Bluejays pushed across a pair of runs in the fourth on an RBI ground out from Kyle Hess and an RBI single from Connor Capece. The duo came through again later in the game as Hess drove an RBI single up the middle in the sixth and Capece capped the win with an RBI single in the ninth.
Matt Aukerman picked up the win (1-0) with three innings of scoreless relief, while Garrett Langrell earned his first save as a Bluejay with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Portland's Carter Gaston took the loss (0-2), allowing four runs on six hits in six innings.
Game 2: Portland 10, Creighton 9
After taking an early 1-0 lead, Creighton fell behind as Portland hit back-to-back homers in the second to seize a 3-1 lead. The Bluejays responded with four runs on three walks, a sac fly and an RBI single by Nick Venteicher and a two-run double from Tate Gillen in the fourth. Portland countered with five runs in the frame, taking advantage of five walks, two misplayed balls and a pair of well struck balls.
Down 10-7 late in the game catcher Nate McHugh connected on two solo home runs to make it 10-9, but it wasn't enough.
Wilson Magers took the loss (1-1), tagged with three runs in the fifth.
The Bluejays and Pilots continue their four-game series on Saturday, February 22 at 1:30 p.m. (CT) at Joe Etzel Field.
