Shifflett’s One-Hit Shutout Guides Softball Past Saint Mary’s Before Falling to UNLV

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Creighton softball team upended Saint Mary's, 4-0, behind a one-hit shutout from sophomore Brooke Shifflett, before falling to UNLV, 4-3, during day two of the UC Santa Barbara Tournament on Saturday.
The Bluejays moved to 9-5 on the year with Saturday's results, while Saint Mary's fell to 8-9 and UNLV improved to 11-6 this season.
Game 1: Creighton 4, Saint Mary's 0
The first game of the day saw sophomore Brooke Shifflett strike out a career-high six batters in a complete game one-hit shutout as the Bluejays upended Saint Mary's 4-0.
Creighton scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, benefiting from a leadoff single by sophomore Sydney Potter and three straight walks to Erika Perez, Ella Dalton and Kenzie Nakasawa to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Lynn Davis then reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed two runs to score as Saint Mary's committed a throwing error. After loading the bases once again on a walk by Sydra Seville, junior Lily West delivered an RBI single down the right field line to give CU a 4-0 lead.
Shifflett took over from there, limiting the Gaels to just two base runners over the final three frames to secure her fifth win of the season.
Shifflett improved to 5-1 on the season in the circle with the one-hit shutout, collecting a career-high six strikeouts, while the Bluejays offense used four hits and six walks to claim the victory.
Game 2: UNLV 4, Creighton 3
In game two, UNLV squeaked past the Bluejays overcoming a pair of one-run deficits to secure a 4-3 victory.
The Bluejays struck first plating a run in the bottom half of the first inning. Seville and West led off the frame with a pair of base hits, before Seville came in to score on a fielder's choice from Dalton to take an early 1-0 lead.
UNLV answered with a run of their own in the top half of the second, perfecting a squeeze play to level the contest at 1-1. The Rebels would then take a 2-1 lead in the third on a sacrifice fly to right by Sage Vandemark.
Creighton responded quickly, regaining the lead with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth. Ashley Smetter opened the frame with a triple, before coming into to score on an RBI single from Ashten Pierson. Tied at 2-2, Seville raced out an RBI infield single to regain a 3-2 lead for the Bluejays.
UNLV, however, would not go away, tying the game at 3-3 on a solo shot to left by Karmyna Becerra in the fifth, before taking a 4-3 lead on an RBI triple from Maddie Scott in the sixth.
Creighton could not mount another comeback as Amelia Weber (5-2) secured the victory for the Rebels.
Bluejay starter Brooklyn Patchen suffered the loss allowing four runs on six hits with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. Seville, West and Pierson combined for six of the Bluejays seven total hits in the contest.
Creighton concludes play at the UC Santa Barbara Tournament on Sunday against host UC Santa Barbara at 12 p.m. Central.
